Can't say much due to an NDA but STO is meh.

From watching the demo videos, it looks like a FPS with with a skill tree stapled onto it.

I used to be excited about this but it's pretty apparent how much they're dumbing it down. Disappointing, really. Will probably just play it for the single-player if I played it at all.

I'm in now and I must say it's at least a bit different from other MMOs in the ship aspect - it plays most like a full-3D Pirates of the Burning Sea, with a constant struggle to balance  shields and power distribution while throwing out attacks and evasive maneuvers and all that. I think the NDA should be lifted tommorow and frankly who cares anyway, so I'll also say that the Bridge Officers stuff is interesting as well - essentially getting a set of lesser characters under your command and with high levels of customization - including complete control over appearance and the ability to level their talents and give out promotions at higher levels.

Definitely buggy but I'm thinking about buying it sometime after launch jitters.

How does it compare to, for example, Eve Online?

From this video it sounds like they have a WoW-style tank/healer/dps mechanic going. Does that work in the environment?

How much freedom of motion is there in flight? Is it three dimensional? Can I go straight up and attack ships from above?

How much of the game looks like fun and how much is grinding for the sake of grinding?

How does commerce work? Any crafting systems? Do they make sense?

I hope it didn't stray too far from the feel of Starfleet Command. If you have a hotkey bar at the bottom for special attacks when your ship builds up enough mana, that would be sad.

Then again it would be worth it just for the screenshots to see your Miranda-class ship riding a griffon around, with Romulans bugging you constantly demanding "duels".

Any one know a good free video editing software I could use to trim and compress some video I recorded? I've got all parts from character creation to planetside battles recorded with fraps but they are in 5gig chunks.

It doesn't at all. Travel from system to system involves going to a map type screen and moving around that. I haven't seen any player crafting (doesn't mean it isn't there) and death doesn't seem to have harsh, if any, downsides.
From this video it sounds like they have a WoW-style tank/healer/dps mechanic going. Does that work in the environment?
I haven't seen this much yet, mainly because I haven't seen any "active" abilites, save the one that allows my away team guy to heal one of my other away team guys. This could be the case later, I am not sure.

How much freedom of motion is there in flight? Is it three dimensional? Can I go straight up and attack ships from above?

Yes, although generally it would seem you want to have your side to them because that allows both lasers to fire.

How much of the game looks like fun and how much is grinding for the sake of grinding?
Tough to say. I guess it could be less grindy because combat is more active, on the other hand, it doesn't take a lot of ability to win combat, so if it just becomes "Fly at the enemy, get in range, turn sideways, fire" it will be grindy...

Also the number of loads screens is going to add to the grindyness of it. Some times you literally load into a screen to press the "f" key just so you can get to another load screen. The load times aren't long, but who wants to do that?

How does commerce work? Any crafting systems? Do they make sense?

I honestly have no idea right now. I haven't stumbled across anyone bringing any of this up. One commerce type system in the game is that you can find anomilies and turn them in for rewards. For example, if you find a bunch of biomass and metal ones you can get a shiny new something.

The game is meh. I would agree with anyone who compaired it to Champions. There doesn't seem to be a lot of depth, but it is kind of... coool. It won't give you the stiffy your frist MMO did and it won't have the lasting power of WoW, at least I don't think so.

It also won't have any cool ground breaking features like multiperson ships or boarding parties.

I think it will be fun however, and if a group of my friends decide to play, I will be picking it up.

Your character starts out small. You mainly are just a crewman to start with. You pick a job, and go through the tutorial for that job. To actually do your job, there are mini-games to do.

Yarr! Puzzle Pirates in space?  ;D

Yeah I don't know what you're talking about. I tried to play puzzle pirates once but it wasn't 100% free so I didn't bother. The last time I paid for a game was when I donated to Toady, before that it was NWN2 in early 2007. I think I just won't pay for games ever again.

Not free? O.o

When I played, there was a 7-day demo, and then you had to pay a monthly fee. Only recently was Puzzle Pirates totally free.

Recently? I wouldn't consider 3 years recent, personally. I never knew about puzzle pirates until the launch of the first free server, though I'm pretty sure it wasn't nearly as well known back when it was subscription only.

Since this is touted as a "wow killer" alongside TOR, I'd say it's safe to assume that this game will crash and burn like any other with that title.

I should correct someone earlier in their statement on nuclear devices.

In terms of Star Trek Nukes are weak weapons and they have been long since outdated.

As for Holograms: They need to be projected and for the most part projecting a hologram INTO someone elses ship is unthinkable.

Who said it's a WoW killer?  It's not even close.  Like someone mentioned above, combat is finding a way to broadside the enemy and turning around every so often to keep your shields.

I don't see this game making it except for the fact that it says "Star Trek" on the box.
