Recommend me a game.
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:44:26 am »

Well, I've got the need for entertainment, yet can't seem to get it out of much anything anymore. I've played almost every retail game released since 1995, so, my hopes of finding a true gem out there that I hadn't played is rare. Any suggestions?

I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

here is a quick list of possibilities, either pre-1995 or non-retail:
-darklands
-wasteland
-Fallout 2 (you can always play it again)
-nethack
-incursion
-chaos overlords

The other option would be to go looking for flash games.

First off, for casual games just go to Kongregate.com. They have basically every flash game that comes out, and the programmers code in badges for them that you can gain on your site account. You also gain XP when you gain badges and vote on games. Some games give you cards that you can use for their (stupid) collectible card game.

Plus it's free.

If you want a more standard game:

FPS
System Shock 2
Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory [Free]
Thief 1 or 2

RPG
Planescape: Torment
Anarchy Online is ... okay. [Free]
Fallout 1 or 2
Ultima Underworld

Grab a Super Nintendo emulator and find a ROM of Uncharted Waters 2. You can find the PC version of it on many abandonware sites, too, but I find the console version to be a bit more intuitive (unless you plan to attack something, then apparently the PC version is better) It's a trading / pirate sim that's surprisingly detailed, including a full world map with thousands of cities.

What else? Maybe Fantasy General (abandonware) or Civil War 2, I've heard they're good, too. Been meaning to play a game called Transarctica for a while now, so feel free to try that out and tell me how it is ;)

Transarctica sounds weird. In a good way.

I looked up Transarctica and came across this screenshot.

I'm sold.

Operation Flashpoint? Arguably the best/DEEP and most modded FPS out there?

IL:2 Sturmovik (sp?) flight simulator... much of the same qualities as above.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront

BF2: Project Reality mod.

Various indie games... I can't think right now.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-54.

This is a really cool game that needs more players.

You could always try the old Quest for Glory series, those games were great.

Let's see...

Strife (Doom Engine game with story and RPG/Stealth features)
Stronghold [D&D] (It's slightly DF-like, you don't have complete control, think D&D mixed with Sim CIty)
Die By The Sword (I hear it's rather hard to get)
And Flatspace 2 is good for wasting time in, its somewhat random.

Stronghold was very strange and confusing.  I could not figure out how to play it.  It did seem cool though.

I tried the demo for Die by the Sword, but it's crashing under all the compatability modes I've tried, and now it won't close.  Not even closing the process can kill it!  It's like some kind of giant enemy crab.

Die by the Sword was a fantastic game.  It's still fun if you can get a LAN game going.

Is it Abandonware yet?  And don't tell me Abandonware never happens.  It may be true, but that doesn't mean I have to listen to you.

DIe by the sword is worth playing... Even tho the manual sword control was way too clumsy... Custom moves were cool tho.
