So I've got a ton of unicorn tallow and a bucket of lye ready. The lye is in a bucket in a stockpile right next to my alchemy lab, but whenever I try and make soap I get the message "cannot make soap, need lye bearing item".

The game is punishing you for not drafting the Soap Maker/killing him in horrible ways. I don't actualy know what you're doing wrong, maybe you marked it as forbidden accidently. Perhaps the game is just being picky.

Yeah, accidentally forbidding the Lye sounds likely.  Other than that, I've never bothered with Soap (usually turning my Soapers into ballista fodder valued warriors), I have no idea.

My dwarves use unicorns like the plains Indians used buffalo so in the interest of using every part of the animal I want to turn their fat into soap and build roads out of it.

I didn't forbid the lye or the bucket so that's not it. I've actually tried this once before awhile ago and had the same problem.

Just use their fat for +Unicorn Tallow Roasts+.

Although soap is a lot more valuable than blocks, so anything you build with it is also very valuable.

Heck, soap is a better building material than obsidian. Soap has a quality modifier.

I believe you need a barrel of lye.  At least that's my experience.

I thought you had to render the fat first.

Yes, the fat needs to be rendered into tallow as well (although the OP said he had tallow).

edit: nevermind, finally got it. Also the base value of unicorn soap is 250, 25% more than a platinum bar.

But so much less than the three platinum goblets you can get for each bar.

At base quality, that's... what?  800x3=2400?

10 value per goblet x 40x multiplier for platinum x 3 goblets = 1200 total

Which is still a ridiculously high value and nearly 5x that bar of soap

☼Platinum goblet☼ = 10☼ * 40 * 12 = 4800☼ for a single goblet. So 3*4800☼ = 14400☼ from a single platinum bar.

All in all, soap's not really worth the effort.
