You don't actually need any skill to do it though. Just activate masonry on any spare dwarves.

Planning on making a glass fortress?

Just don't throw stones. :D

I kid.  Glass is a wicked awesome building material if you think about it.  My current fort has a section of ceiling made from glass that I'm going to have magma flow over as it heads to the magmafall at the front of my fortress.

I know the laws of physics would weep, but imagine how awesome it would be to look up as you head out to collect some wood and see magma flowing above your head.

Glass melts under magma :(.

Maybe walls work differently, but test out a few walls of glass in a magma channel first before screwing over your life's work.

D:

Are you sure?  I remember hearing somewhere that walls and floors are safe from magma as long as they're not flammable, which I don't think glass is...

Only stuff that is magma proof is steel, bauxite, possible iron and adaminite.

Like I said, test it out first on a small scale. If you can't use magma water will work just fine for an underwater effect.

Constructions (walls and floors) are indestructible at the moment.

You could make them out of wood and they would still hold back the magma.

I'm pretty sure glass is magma-proof too. I've noticed glass floodgates work well versus magma... but I could be wrong.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Glass floodgates, glass windows, and glass grates (and obviously glass walls, but this is is irrelevant as all constructions are fireproof. I´ve had pine walls against magma) hold against magma. AFAIK glass is magma proof in DF.

You could make walls out of ice and magma still wouldn't melt them! Glass walls are perfectly safe around magma.

Indeed. You only need bauxite when you need mechanisms for floodgates.

Yeah, I'm stockpiling bauxite at the moment since I need enough for 6 floodgates and enough pumps to make the magma flow from the moat back up to the magmafall.

I'm happy my glass ceiling will work. ;D

At least until an update, anyway.  "Gee, this ceiling sure is nice and - oh hey, is it meltOH GOD MAGMA IN THE FORTRESS!"

Glass does melt in magma, but only glass items. I.e. an unbuilt glass window will melt, but a built one won't.

Constructions will only melt from being on the same tile as magma, not adjacent to a magma tile.

So, for instance, you could make a floodgate out of silk and bituminous coal mechanisms, and it will stand firm against the magma... but when you open it, magma will flow into the same tile and burninate it.
