It's called "Archimedes' Screw!"

The ball represents water or another liquid. The screw is tight to the sides of the pipe, allowing it to transport liquids. Just like in DF, it can be powered by a waterwheel, windmill or other forms of power, or manually. Naturally, it was invented by Archimedes. It was one of the first pumps ever made.

Wonder what he'd be called in DF. Urist Dwarfimedes the Wheat of Smarts?

That image right there is why I like the idea of fitting "Enormous Corkscrews" into my weapon traps. Just imagining the things violently thrusting out from the door, augering their way through the flesh of my enemies... chunks flying everywhere. The rear ranks, seeing the terrible fate that their bretheren just suffered, break and run, only to find that their escape route has been blocked off.

Archimedes is one of the few people I'd classify as more awesome than Toady. So I don't think they're the same person. <_<

So that's what those are called! I knew that type of machine existed, but I didn't know the name.


Also, is seems like that  would not be the best way to transport water..

For an intro engineering class we went out to a waste water treatment plant where they used screw pumps to move water about.  Pretty much everything I encounter nowadays reminds me somehow of Dwarf Fortress.

When you consider that:

A. Before Archimedes' screw there was virtually no way of moving water uphill
B. While more efficient designs exist, it is incredibly easy to make and can be done using nothing more than wood (Just like in DF!)

It is indeed an awesome way to transport water.
