Planescape: Torment
« on: August 09, 2008, 06:33:07 pm »

I keep hearing great things about it, so I'm planning to pick up a copy.

I heard that there's 2 releases: a 4 CD that came in a box and a 2 CD in jewel cases. A few people mentioned that some stuff was cut or compressed to a lower quality on the 2 CD release. So I want to get the old 4 CD release for the higher quality?
Any mods/patches/fan-work I want to pick up?

Also, feel free to discuss the game here. Mark spoilers appropriately.

About damn time there was a thread on this game.  I need to go back and play it again, it's been way to long since I read that interactive novel and chatted with a burning corpse.

I never knew there was a 4CD version.  Can't imagine anything being left out except maybe graphics and cutscenes, neither of which were really necessary.  No patches I can think of, and I'm pretty sure it can't even be modded.

Here's one unofficial fix pack you'd want to have.
http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/pst-fixpack

Personally I haven't played with any other mods, except two official ones released on Easter and St. Paul's Day. That two change the look of two party members in the game.

I don't know there's a 2CD release... but if something was cut, then you definitely should get the original 4CD one. Planescape: Torment is the most amazing CRPG I've ever seen and you should experience it in full.

Mine has four CDs.  I got it from someone else who never opened it though and I don't know when he bought it.  It's in an old big box though, and says 1999 RPG of the year on it, and it's got the older style ESRB logos so you can probably determine the date with a bit of searching.

Does anyone know the difference between the two releases for sure?

There's a new unpopular site which allows you to get some info you want to know: Google.
You make a request like this: "planescape torment 4 CD 2 CD".
http://www.subgamers.com/forums/adventure/23843-planescape-torment-how-many-cd.html

4 CD: older version, in a box with a paper manual.

2 CD: jewel version, better image compression, a manual is on CDs.

The game content was not changed.

I hope I helped. :D

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

Your first ally is a flying skull whose teeth you can upgrade.

Best game.

And your second possible ally is the coolest yellow-skined skinny man you'll ever met.

Obsidian made a cheap clone of him in NWN2. >:(

And then later on you get a chaste succubus and a crazy talking TV.

And you get to make a guy by lying a lot.

And argue a guy into not existing.

I love this game.

They made a cheap clone of Anna in NWN2 too.  Course she was the most normal of all the possible allies.

This is the best game of all time, seriously.

If you are interested in game design, the vision statement for the game is a jewel in itself.
Here is a link:
(CONTAIN MANY SPOILERS)http://www.rpgwatch.com/files/Files/00-0208/Torment_Vision_Statement_1997.pdf

This is what happen when the designers are genuinely excited about the game they are making.

Or you can pick him up at the hottest bar in town.

(Hint: It's the one that radiates heat.)

He's definitely worth it, for the conversations alone.  If you've got a high enough wisdom you can practically gain a level (and a bunch of spells) just by asking him about his wheel a lot.  That's good advice for the whole game actually, and the thing I probably love most about Planescape.  Having a really high wisdom and intelligence lets you gain experience all over the place from the masterfully written dialogue.

While you're in the bar be sure to talk to the two demons.  They're hilarious.
