I just started a new fortress with 39f, completely new world.
Autumn arrived in the first year and the dwarven caravan + diplomat arrived. I started moving my few rock rings tot he trade depot and watched the caravan whilst the dwarves were hauling.

The caravan headed straight towards the depot until they got close, then they veered off and headed to a map edge (a different one from where they came on), then left. I noticed on my big stockpile at the entrance to my fortress I've now somehow acquired things I definitely didn't have before, including an iron anvil (I didn't bring one, brought a muskox herd instead), a steel crossbow and a variety of different meats.

The date when the caravan left the map was 24th Limestone, so it shouldn;t have been to long a trip.

Has this been seen before? I'll keep played, see if the elves do the same.

Sounds like a classic case of dead traders. A wild animal or some such probably attacked someone in the caravan and killed them. This would cause the rest of the group to pack up and head for home and would also cause your dwarves to pick up whatever items to poor trader dropped at the time of death.

Ahh yes, sorry.

There are no dead dwarves on the map but there is a dead Kapok Wagon!

More likely it ran over a critter.  Wagons seem to explode if the middle back tile goes over something non-friendly.
