Quick Question: Free Metal?
« on: August 09, 2008, 05:14:58 pm »

I've heard that you can get free goods from modding in a smelter reaction, but I've looked over the page on the wiki and I don't quite understand how it works.  I'm looking to make steel bars en masse for a story.  Is this doable?

add its to reaction_standard.txt
Just change the metal to the one you want.

Thanks!

OH! I forgot to tell you.

That reaction creats 10 bars of iron for each time you use the reaction, so 10 reactions will net you 100 IRON bars

Also, you must create a new world before this works.

You could just edit an existing entry instead of making a whole new one.

Go to the Reaction_standard.txt, and find the reaction that makes steel. Simply delete the line that starts with " [REAGENT:" and you can now make steel out of absolutly nothing.

Also, if you're interested, in the "[PRODUCT:" line, it starts with two numbers: the first, we think, is the percent chance that the reaction succeeds, the second is how many of the product is produced. You could edit the second number to like, 50, and only have to run the reaction once.

Yes. this reaction creates 150 maple logs per use.

10... 100... 150...

Inefficient, you know?

If you're going to cheat the system, you should cheat in such a way that you only need to do it once. Remember that so long as you don't allow stockpiles to take whatever you generate, the smelter can become an infinitely large stockpile which also saves space.

With this, you should make it so that it creates... hrm... 200000000 bars each use? That way you don't have to worry about having someone on "MAKE FREE IRON" (R) while your legendary weaponsmith does his thing.

Yeah, but then the amount of wealth generated causes almost instant sieges from all nearby civilizations, and there are so many bars that that smelter is slowed down to the worthless point, all of the tiles there become unbuildable because there are so many things to move on each square if you do destroy the smelter, and if you have any bar stockpiles every single bin in your fortress is taken and filled to the brim with steel bars and then placed in a bar stockpile, all the while generating haul tasks.

Those are good points. But all easily circumventable. It's why I said you should make it so that you no longer consider your smelter to be a smelter, but as an unlimited size storage space.

By planning ahead of time where to put your smelter (basically putting one right next to your forge), you will never need to touch it again. Hence, no lag, no space problems, no hauling time problems, no hauling, nothing. Sure, you might get sieges, but everyone get sieges eventually and it's not a particularly big deal (unless someone is deathly afraid of sieges for some reason).

If you put a cheatsmelter next to a magma forge as so (S for smelter, F for forge), your metalworkers can work at almost perfect efficiency. And if you need bar stockpiles for other metals, you can designate one somewhere and exclude the cheat metal from the list.
