12th Malachite
Well, no luck finding the water just yet, but we had the fortune to find coal embedded in the rock. Baughn's been put to work refining it, so hopefuly we can do some metalworking without burning our precious tower caps.
16th Malachite
Finally broke into the river, inside a cluster of bauxite to the east of our outpost. One of the frogmen living in it tried to take me for lunch, but the others had been following me to inspect another discovery of ours, a ruby cluster. After Gaulgath beat the sense out of one of the slimy things, we blocked the river off again with a locked door across the rather narrow passage. In the future, maybe we'll clear it out, but for now we'll see if a bucket on a rope provokes them overmuch... We could use the water.
14th Galena
Well, no sign of any company yet. I imagine it's possible the expedition postponed it's trip due to the unyeilding heat, but either I'm getting used to it, or it's beginning to cool down. It's not so bad under the mountain, but the spire has the weather and the forges to contend with. I don't envy Baughn's work. At least I get to stay cool. Also, it would seem we have a solution to the water creatures beating on our barricade door. I dug away a side passage, then knocked some small holes in it, too small for even the snakemen to get through. From here, Gaul decided to take some target practice, netting us a few less critters and a much safer barricade, for now at least.
7th Limestone
Well, I decided it was time to mine out the platinum to make into crafts for the caravan... And Baughn assumed I'd told him to do it, so now we have enough usable platinum for maybe a bead or two... Guess we'll have to use the stuff in the spire, but in the meantime I took Baughn's pick and had him keep on the fuel production, and I'm just too tired to do it myself...
14th Limestone
Too late, at any rate. The caravan arrived, and we don't have a lot to trade just yet. Hopefuly they'll stick around a while. Also, turns out they led a few kobolds along with them, which may explain the missing bolts. Gaul's got bone bolts now, courtesy of G, so if we see them again...
Turns out Gaul found one in the river tunnel... Which leaves another unaccounted for, but I think anything we have of value is up at the trade depot right now... Found a bag made of giant cave spider silk, should net us something.
28th Limestone
The caravan is taking on some of our water while it stops to recouperate. Turns out they misjudged the heat here, and ended up having to drink their trading supply just to make it this far. Meantime, we've mined out the last of the coal vein, so now my plans have turned toward getting the water closer to our fort... I'm fairly sure a screw pump or two would be useful, both to keep the flow going and to keep the critters out of our water supply. For now, though, the plan is to make a tunnel connecting to the river's source and punch another small hole into the end. But before we do that, we'll need to move all the raw coal away from the area. Just in case...
16th Sandstone
The caravan is about ready to leave. Good for them, and I hope they have a better time of it next year. Meantime, we're slowly getting more done. G is beginning to write up the books for our settlement in the administrative building I've carved out for him. It'll house the future mayor in it as well, or possibly the sherrif, alongside the clerical office. Also, I've dug out the magnetite at the spire's top - It runs pure all the way through. Quite a sight, and with a tip of red Bauxite at the top... Hm, that gives me an idea, but I'll have to think on it later.
18th Moonstone
Some of the rubies we gathered have gone missing. Gaul's on sentry at the entrance to watch for any kobold activity now, and an entrance more to our liking is currently being outfitted while we wait for Aqizzar to finish the designs on our water system. I wish we had more people.
13th Opal
G has taken to stonecrafting during the short periods he looks up from his books. Can't hurt, I say. The caravan from last year had requested them, and G seems to have a knack for most things. Also, we've laid some simple traps across our new entryway, and work has begun on the water system now. It's about as cold as I've ever known it to be here, hopefuly it'll stay this way a while longer when we go to put up the mills, assuming we get a shipment of wood... Wishful thinking.
24th Opal
Aquizzar had gone missing for a while, and it took us a bit to find him. A day, in fact, the dwarf had managed to get himself stuck behind the first screw pump he'd made. When I broke in to free him, the walls were covered in tic-tac-toe games, and he had the nerve to chide me for interrupting his commune before rushing off to get a drink of brew. Guy must've gone sober in there.
17th Obsidian
It seems the year is almost over, and while we haven't progressed as far as I'd like, we've managed to make a half-decent outpost in the blast-furnace of nowhere. Still no sign of others, so I suppose we'll be going this alone. I suppose if we've made it one year, we can make it more.
Baughn is getting on well with the forges, and we have a surplus of iron bars and coke fuel that would do a mid-sized fortress proud, although some concern has risen about all that fuel being stacked around the smelter. For now I've decided he should get to work making a few crafts for next year's caravan, practicing with a few iron bars until we can find some proper craftsman's metal. He's also pretty happy about the gems we've dug out, being a follower of Ral and all.
Gaulgath has been skulking a bit lately, having spent most of his days (and several nights) just outside the entrance to the fortress. Heat's probably getting to him, he seems more at home in the mountain itself. Once we train our dogs properly, he'll have some relief, and for now he seems content enough.
Antila has been quite happy lately, having had a good deal of free time in between the farming cycles to play games. He's been going on about his idea of having a giant chessboard set up in a cavern by the meeting hall, 'for the veneration of Igoth'. Sounds harmless enough, and the masons have been getting tired of doors and tables by now, I imagine.
Jennifer has spent a lot of her time in the farms lately, and seems to be less familiar with most of the others. When she's not farming, she generaly keeps to her room, though her added brewing duties may serve to change that a bit, brew doing what it does.
Aqizzar's been doing fine, working without a lot of complaint. He's also been meeting with Antila about her idea, as they both follow Igoth. He's been giving me pictures and sketches of what they want the chessboard and pawns to look like. A sort of montage of dwarven history, with figures from various ages. Interesting enough, though I've suggested that we commission a few different sets when the time comes, so that dwarves can pick and choose their own army. Seemed to make him happy enough.
G-Dwarf has been spending a bit much time in his books lately, and when he's not there, as I've said, he's stonecrafting. Got his mind on our wealth, it seems, but Lanlar wouldn't have it to let him stay underground without so much as a glimpse of the moon and sky, so he's been off his books for the winter. Once the weather heats up, I think a discreet hole in the ceiling will have to serve - It's just too extreme out there.
Well, here's hoping for a better year.
