dwarven Multiverse
« on: August 09, 2008, 01:21:39 pm »

Right Heres my idea for a game.

We all start of with the same dwarves and the exact same area, We all start at near enough the same time and then we can post updates every so often and compare how each players fortress is going, and at the end we can vote between us on what we consider "the best fortress" out of those that survived.

If you want in then sign up here, once I've got enough sign ups, we can vote between us on what type of area we want to settle in, and the types of dwarves we want. Once thats agreed I'll go out of my way to find an area suitable, embark and save, and then upload the save for us to all play.

Any questions, if not then why ain't you signing up already!

Hm. I'm in, with the requirement that the site has /some/ neat stuff - aquifer, cave, chasm or magma - something.

Sounds great.  Count me in.

As for features though - part of the fun is dealing with problems and work arounds.  I've often found myself bored by maps with lots of features, and had great fun in ordinary places.  It would be interesting to see how different players cope with the same shortages.  If anything, I would argue against magma, just for the challenge.

And yes, I know I'll be voted down.

No, I'm fine with no magma. I just want evil beings who want to kill us on the map. :P

Magma is useful. A chasm full of bat-people.. not so much.

im pretty fine with no magma, but we'll see how the other players interested in joining react. for the moment we should just let people sign up, once we've got 6-7 players we can decide on an area and name.

nano fortress, terrifying, desert, salt water aquifier - three layers.

You'd have to cling to the very surface layers and somehow erect a fortress with imported materials, without anything to actually trade for it with... Well, possibly bone crafts. Hm, neutral aligned desert? But then you'd still get wildlife, dang.

Can the moon be accurately generated in worldgen for our dwarves to languish on? 'cos it's the only environment I can imagine where they would not thrive.

Oh wait. I know. Magma. Lots of magma.. TOO MUCH Magma. Make the entire fortress by carefully pouring water into a gigantic magma cauldron and digging out the obsidian into rooms. The steam alone will kill hundreds. XD

heh, whilst we want difficult, the problem with such specifics as those is that it leaves little opportunity for differences in fortress design, theres only a few way you can get water into magma, etc.

What would be good is a difficult map were there is still enough variance that each player can develop an individual fortress that can be completely different to a fortress by another player on the same map. The point of this game is two fold: at its basic its to survive in a hard world, but second fold its to compare the many different fortress designs employed by many different players.

the question is, are you in? ;)

Hm... Probably would need some mountain involved, to make more architecture possibilities. Maybe mountain with aquifier? I've had one of those before, not sure how easy they are to find...

Just thinking.  What we could do is use the same seed (or save) and embark on the same area with the same loadouts, but then we could have different fortress names.

Also, for a real challenge, I propose we Embark Now! instead of fine tuning the loadout.  After a few seasons, it doesn't matter much anyway.

Problem with that is getting people to all get the exact same area completely lined up, just finding a similar area can be a problem, and I bet you one guy may accidently do 5x4 when everyone else  did 4x4 or something.

but Play now seems like a challange. What do you start of with that load out, ive never used it?

Sign me in.

I would like to embark with the goods that I want. If we all chose our equipment by ourself it would be the part of the competition.

And oh, when the time comes, how do we take care of the voting?

problem with choosing our own goods is that it makes the embarking sequence harder, as I have to post screenshots of the exact position of the embark location, then everyones got to find it, (whilst hoping they understand my tileset) then set there area to the same, etc. its doable but its alot harder than me uploading the save already ready.

when it comes to voting I suppose we'll go with a sort of questionaire kind thing.

like
Do you want Magma: y/n
Do you want Aquifer y/n

and so on.

Also if I set the save up, theres seven players, we can name a dwarf after one of us each. That'd be a pretty good idea.

Mmm, would be interesting to see how our "styles" differ. I always try something new with every fortress iteration however... Maybe I can squeeze in some ideas I've had in the backburner, while retaining the quirks that has worked well thus far. ^.^

I'm in. Come hell or sunshine, I will fortress..ize the patootie out of whatever you throw at me.

Right, I've had an idea on how to decide what dwarves to bring.

Each player here will have one dwarf named after him, and he can choose the skills that dwarf has, within reason, EG we cant end up with 5 miners/metalsmiths and two fisher dwarves.
assuming we use this idea I'll be decoy, farmer/cook
