What I don't get is how the image import actually functions.  Nearest I can figure, they hide some info in the png somewhere, but that's still neat.

I was reading penny arcade's thread about spore and someone took one of the importable images and threw it into photoshop.. It appears that the background is actually an alpha mask hiding the data needed to make the critter.  I think they discovered the data is about 8k.

This is the demo of the the creature creator from the full game.  They also have a purchasable version of the creature creator that has more parts.  The pirated version of that is already out and it doesn't have all the parts either.  Meanwhile the actual game is coming out in September.

So basically, yeah, you can buy an 'enhanced' demo version.  With all the other shit EA pulls this isn't really worth getting angry about.

Can you also add more parts in the pirated version? It seems you are only allowed one of each category before your creature is "too complicated"

That's strange, I've seen lots of creatures with more than one of each part.  I doubt the pirated version is any different from the regular version.

Might be the number of limbs--the connectivity really balloons out the complexity rating. Besides, think of it this way: Which takes more data to record: "1 spike, 1 claw, 1 clump of grass, 1 rock, 1 deedlybopper, 1 fin..." or just "6 menacing spikes"? Probably it is more able to compress multiples of one type of part.

Also I've noticed that adding more than one mouth can make it "too deep" really fast.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment towards EA, there is a valid reason for them to release the creature editor early: We're doing their work for them.

One of the selling points of Spore is that your universe is populated by a bunch of creatures other people have made.  But as you can imagine, pickings will be slim in the beginning.  That is, unless they released the creature creator to the public months before the release of the game!  Part of the EULA you agree to when you install is that you give EA the right to reproduce, alter, sell, etc. the content you create.  So now when Spore is released in September, there will be thousands upon thousands of creatures ready to run amok in our games.

It's brilliant, really.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but I finally read this, and it made me sick to my stomach.  I can understand piracy, and I agree that a sense of true loss really does make combat meaningful.  But what they did was truly evil and most definitely affected those people IRL as well.  It's as though your tier-5, fully-keyed level 70 in WoW were killed in an arena battle, and suddenly you were level 30.  Not only that, but all of your gear and all of your keys are gone, even the stuff you had in your bank.

There is a difference between roleplaying an evil character and being a truly malicious person, and I have to say that the GHSC folk fall fully in the latter category.
