Only available for digital download via Steam? ... I need some international digital distribution >.< ... Even direct2drive doesn't sell down here.

I am waiting for an Impulse release actually. I've decided to buy it, since it looks like that the developers are updating the game quite often. So I guess in 2-3 months, the game will be much more better than it is now. [Especially if they gonna implement the suggestions of the players.]  8)

OK, this is barely on-topic, but Steam games for Sean: Team Fortress 2 is a blast if you like FPS.  Also, Portal, but I think they require you to play Portal before they give you an internet these days so I'm sure you've played it.  And Left 4 Dead, coming out in November (I think) looks very promising so far.

I haven't checked out much else, but I'm not sure where anti-Steam sentiment comes from.  If it's total unwillingness to pay for games then I guess I can't convince you.  But as far as methods for preventing piracy go, Steam is pretty acceptable to me, and the games aren't $60.

It helps that Valve makes great games.
I personally pirate games, as do probably at least 50% of the people here.
My reasons for doing so are for one; not having to install steam, which I NEVER EVER WANT ON MY PC EVER AGAIN! (sorry about the caps)
Same counts for any secondairy junk installed with for example spore. (EA download manager)
Thirth reason is me being plain lazy.
Fourth reason is not willing to pay for nearly every game (price/quality - tag)
Fifth is the fact that I still do not trust internet banking.

EDIT:
sixth is the willing to have something touchable, actually having something in return for your money, not something that you can loose easily.

That's cool Angellus but I don't see what it has to do with the topic; Hinterland!

It's a fun game for short play sessions.    I dunno if I keep trying to do stuff the hard way or whatever, but it tends to get tedious with a bunch of followers to manage.   It's got a very dumbed-down Diablo feel, which is nice in a casual-play sorta way, but the city building just ain't as exciting as they made it seem.   Townfolk don't really 'have their own lives' so much as 'stand still'.

Here's to surprise content packs, though!

Yep, exactly my biggest problem with Hinterland. 1 game can be completed in a few hours. I prefer long, epic gameplay sessions.
However TM is updating the game at lightspeed, so who knows, they might expand the gameplay also.

I'm enjoying Hinterland.  It's thoroughly brainless, yet at the same time is completely compelling; there's always something else to be doing.  In a sense it's refreshing to see that it makes no pretence at being "roleplay"; Hinterland is an arcade game a la Dungeon Siege, and within the narrow boundaries it sets - the tagline Loot! Level! Build! - it's cute as a short diversion.  It reminds me very much of SAIS.

Hopefully the developers are going to continue releasing content fast, although I've a sneaking suspicion that the first patch consisted of all the stuff that was almost but not quite ready for the release date.  Touch wood!

I am pretty sure that they will keep updating the game. Also as I see, the game is selling quite well so far.  :)

Content update already for the game makin it a bit better. Lots of little changeS:
The Free Content Update includes:

Two new playable character types - The Elf Archer and the Dwarf Warrior

Creature-specific item drops - Rare and unique items, (e.g. Troll Blood) that give the character who consumes them permanent bonuses

Character Info Screen - Details your abilities, and gives information on the town in general

Resource management through economic means - Dig a well for Fresh Water, plant Herbs, import Iron, etc.

Expanded character customization choices when leveling - Three ability choices instead of two with the third choice based on your character's profession.

Item Sorting - Ability to automatically sort inventory items by type and relative power

Auto-equipping - Townspeople will automatically take items they can use from the town inventory periodically as needed (this can also be turned off if desired)

Miscellaneous balancing, pacing and usability improvements and refinements - made in response to player feedback

I bought Hinterland and haven't found it very enjoyable.  A good concept, but poor implementation, which is becoming something of a trend for Tilted Mill.  The trouble is, I think, that the development team went to great lengths to rip off Diablo 1, including copying things that aren't fun, but merely characterize the technological limitations of the late 90s.

It would be fun if the simplified hack and slash had been connected with the even more simplified city building in such a way as to yield a new layer of strategy.  Unfortunately, it doesn't, you're just playing two bad games at once.

The Colonization remake came out recently and is on Steam fairly cheaply.  A much better buy.

Thanks for the mini review. Yep it looks like that almost everyone finds the game way too simple.  :-X

Just picked this up at Best Buy (for 20$)

I'll concur with the groupthink:  It's a good concept, but about 2 inches deep.

Interesting.  The review is appreciated.  Regardless of its timeliness.  :)

I didn't notice it was necro'd at first, so I thought this post near the start of the thread was high sarcasm:

Looks interesting. I might buy it when it comes out. Summer 2008, eh? That would imply soon, would it not?

I'm hoping someone'll tell me of some cool mod for this, maybe even involving a fix for baddies hiding behind buildings...  NO, I DON'T WANT TO PULL UP THE BUILDING MENU, I WANT TO SMACK THE TROLL!

Yeah, which is why I don't have this game installed on my HDD anymore.  :-\ The concept is good, but the "quality"&gameplay value is low.
