I don't think he was here for most of that.

I myself have noticed in pretty much every other games thread here that people advocate piracy a bit too pridefully.   I think it'd be best to respect Toady's wishes on this issue.

That's silly. Just because some people on a forum exchange information they more than likely know about doesn't lead to said forum becoming a hive of 'criminal activity'.

Don't try to sanitize this.  First of all, Asehujiko didn't know where to find it, or he wouldn't have asked:

"Pirate Hinterland!"
"Hey, I do want to pirate Hinterland!  Where can I do it?"

If several games threads turn into this, a platform for criminal activity is exactly what you have.  That's what it is.  Many of you are used to pirating games, but what if somebody just wants to talk about a game and doesn't feel comfortable posting among the torrent links?  You can call that person silly too, but not everybody pirates games.  Not everybody swears either or feels comfortable with it, but swearing isn't a crime.  This is not the forum I want, and it's not the forum I'm going to have.  I'm not saying it's like that now (although if somebody posted a link in the Spore thread, let me know), but it does seem to be trending that way and I'd like it to stop.

As far as legal hassles go, I really have no idea, but if I receive a single email attempting to get me to release information about a member or to take a thread down or threatening to report me to my hosting provider, it's gone way too far, and I think that's easily within the realm of possibility should things continue down this road.  Even if they are abusing their power in making such a request, it's not as if I should be surprised, having allowed the situation to get to that point.

I wasnt saying your outlawing of the linking was silly, more the reason (Legal Issues) was far fetched. I've really got no issue with it, just don't go so far as to ban at the mention of it, as many other forums do.

If that were the case, you'd have to think that they'd have bigger fish to fry than a loose coalition of Geeks exchanging links on a rather unknown forum. I've seen stupider things happen, though.

I'm not currently proposing anything stricter than my now stated intention of banning people that post links.  I like that people can talk about the issues surrounding piracy in general, and the value of a full free demo inspires my own distribution model.  I dislike hype more than piracy, in fact, because I feel more people lose more money through bullshit advertising, regardless of the status of either act in law.  All the same, the tangible problems, from the forum's admin standpoint, come from the links, and if discussions of piracy inevitably lead toward the type of exchange above, then I can see why other places are stricter than this one.

Yeah, I'm not having delusions of grandeur here.  I don't think it's likely, but having something like "Other Games > Torrents link thread!" would certainly paint a bullseye on my ass for any company employee that decided to drop by, he he he.  I remember the Sims 3 team has at least one DF player -- I'd hate to have that person have to choose between their loyalties or something all dramatic like that.  "I'm sorry Toady...  I just...  I just had to do it!  You've pushed me too far!  :'("

Is that before or after the dramatic final kiss?

The actual question is what would be on those torrents in that thread.

I'd just like it if every thread about a game here didn't devolve into some rationalization for piracy, or people who do pirate acting smug to people who paid for software.  It really derails discussions faster than anything else.

Hinterland impressions @ Dubious Quality:

http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/2008/10/hinterland-impressions.html

"Now, do any of the weaknesses I've mentioned make the game less than compelling? Not at all, because this is a tremendously fun game, and it is jam-packed with the all-important "just fifteen more minutes" quality. It's one of my favorite PC games this year, and the game itself is a tremendous platform that would support all kinds of enhancements and expansions."

OK, this is barely on-topic, but Steam games for Sean: Team Fortress 2 is a blast if you like FPS.  Also, Portal, but I think they require you to play Portal before they give you an internet these days so I'm sure you've played it.  And Left 4 Dead, coming out in November (I think) looks very promising so far.

I haven't checked out much else, but I'm not sure where anti-Steam sentiment comes from.  If it's total unwillingness to pay for games then I guess I can't convince you.  But as far as methods for preventing piracy go, Steam is pretty acceptable to me, and the games aren't $60.

It helps that Valve makes great games.

I'd gladly buy games off the net, but. No credit card to pay electronically. Also, no limitless internet. The least I can hope to pay is 0.5RUR per megabyte (at night), which means I would pay ~20$ for every gigabyte downloaded.

On the other hand, I probably could find a limitless internet thing (256Kbit... yeah), but what use would I have of it? I would be required to keep the PC on and downloading at all times, but I usually carry it off to work.

Ouch...I thought that Russian net is better to be honest. Here in Hungary its pretty ok now thankfully...
I have a 16mbit DSL line [LAN network in the house, so my brother -who is living in the lower level in the house- is also using this net], and there is no download limit at all of course, plus its quite cheap ~40 euros/month.
I plan to change however. LAN internet has been built out already, it has 30mb/sec download and 20mb/sec upload speed, and its only ~15 euros/month.
