Auto-forbid items that drop from corpses.
« on: August 08, 2008, 03:01:26 am »

This has probably been discussed before, but to be honest my connection is too slow right now to search for it. :P

Anyway, this is pretty much what the topic title says.  Automatically forbid any item that drops when a goblin, dwarf, or whatever is killed.  This would stop the massive waves of suicidal dwarves trying to pick up fallen equipment in the middle of a siege.  If the player wants the items later, they can reclaim them either individually or from the stocks menu.  A little extra work for loads less hassle.

[E]:  Zombie came up with an excellent orders menu layout, here:

Quote
(o)rders
   (A)utomatic dump/forbid
      (F)orbid
         (c)ritter corpses and loot
         (d)warf corpses and loot

I took out auto-dumping of items because I realized it doesn't really solve the issue, just creates a different, identical one (instead of loads of haulers going out to collect the items you have loads of haulers going out to dump the items).  The stone dumping is a good idea, but it's not what we're trying to solve. Sorry. :P

The idea behind the toggles on the orders menu is that you could turn these options on during a siege or when you get ambushed, so that the gobbo corpses and anything they drop are ignored.  Then, once the battle is over, you flip the option off (which wouldn't reclaim already forbidden items, just stop new corpse drops from being forbidden) and reclaim whatever you think you need.

Discuss, agree, disagree, insult my parentage, etc.

I'm glad all the DF players are not living in one district. It'd be the most dangerous district for the whole world.
Actually, it'd be the most dangerous district in hundreds of thousands of worlds, starting with 'Xah Rabin' The Dimension of Omen.

Please please please.

Maybe have some option to switch on or off as well.

Agreed!  Can be an init file if Toady don't want to bother with touching the interface right now.  But it could be under the 'o'rder option.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I'd like it in
  • rders, so we can switch it on when we get sieged and stuff.

YES YES AND YES AGAIN!

it is irritating being on a map with more than one group of dangerous creatures as they fight and then there are too many corpses and bones and what not to handle and then you get hit by an ambush and BOOM!

I propose that this goes for anything that dies. Everything it drops (corpse, clothes, weapons, etc) it all is forbidden. I also propose that this be put into the next release. I don't think it should be all that hard to code (just a quick addition to the code to add a forbidden flag on drop). If it is then forgive me though this desperately needs to be implemented as the game is almost unplayable for me as is.

This is one of the features I would love to see added. I abandon about half my fortresses because I get sick of dealing with the piles of crap produced by sieges and destroyed caravans.

Fortunately, the new mass dump/melt/forbid designation features make this somewhat less annoying, but I'd still like it to happen automatically with slain enemies.

Good idea. It's perfectly fine as a default behavior, I believe. And don't ask for an init option if you want to see it in the next version, ok? Options are hard to make and hard to maintain for the programmer.

Another suggestion with a similar result was that bodies (or body parts) would be treated like containers, and hauled as one job back to the refuse pile, where they then would be looted.
Of course, a "gather fallen enemies" option would still be needed.

I agree that this would be useful, but would be more useful as a conditional toggle from the (o)rders... Sort of like the (W)orkshop orders, it would be cool to be able to toggle various auto-forbids or auto-dumps.

I use a large dump pile (as opposed to a stockpile) for all mined materials when I first start, so I have clear hallways and a large pile of stone right near my crafters and masons. This (and the mass-dump designation) lets me pick and choose when and what to move to one location, then I just un-forbid it all and let them sort out the ores and gems and things.

It would be nice to see something like so:

(o)rders
   (A)utomatic dump/forbid
      (D)ump
         (s)tone - mined
         (g)ems - mined
         (o)re - mined
         (c)ritter corpses and loot
         (d)warf corpses and loot
      (F)orbid
         (c)ritter corpses and loot
         (d)warf corpses and loot

This way we have a few nice options going on. As your miners mine, your haulers can dump the stone if you choose, but leave ore or gems... Or dump/leave any combination of the three.

It think this suggestion might also be applicable here... For those of us that enjoy aggravating the Evil From Below (tm), a (c)hasm designation and zone to separate (d)umps from. I think it's important because, in some cases, mass-dumping a whole bunch of things to be moved and just letting your dwarves sort it out later by un-forbidding it is more efficient. A (c)hasm designation would also be fun so we could toss horrid, horrid things. Or just dump the siege goblin corpses in there. Dust to dust, Teeming Evil (tm) to Teeming Evil (tm), right? :P Or just to (c)hasm a few buckets of piping water just to piss them off.

We really do need this badly. Spread the word, wake the toad. He shall not rest until we have this one thing (then he can go enjoy some fine dwarven ale once he is finished).

I'm glad people are liking this, I'll try to keep it on the front page until we get the attention of The Toad. ;D

And yeah, I like the idea of an order to toggle this on and off.  Something like "Dwarves ignore corpse items/Dwarves gather corpse items".  If it's too much work, though, I'd settle for just automatically forbidding them and letting us reclaim it all later.

I just like the idea of making your miners mine out a vein with auto-dumping of mined ore on... Right to the haulin' pile, ready for processing!

Yea that would be so incredibly useful. Then you could just turn off stone hauling for miners and get a few dedicated haulers to clean it out as you go.
