What are the effects of zombie- and skeleton-dom?
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:04:55 pm »

Essentially what it says on the tin.

How hot can it get before they take damage? How cold? Do they move slower than normal? Faster?

And for that matter, do they need to eat? Or drink? Heal? These usually aren't an issue, but I'm toying with the idea of playing zombie dwarves (as mentioned in post eight of here) to see how gameplay changes.

I don't know about heat damage - If I had to guess I would guess it was the same as the original creature. As far as speed goes, zombies are much much slower then 'normal' creatures while skeletons are the same speed (or possibly faster) then normal.

As for playing zombie dwarves, I don't think you can. Zombies are not a race, the game is just hard coded to take existing creatures and turn them into zombies or skeletons. You might be able to work around it with companion or something but I don't know if it will all work right.

yeah, currently zombies and skeleton monsters are "hardcorded". If you use Dwarf Companion to turn creatures into zombies or skeletons, they will automatically attack you or your dwarves. This leads to some hilarity when you use DC to turn a legendary miner in your fort into a skeleton, and then proceed to raise him from the dead every time he's managed to get killed.

You can mod in skeletal/zombie creatures into the game by giving tags such as [NOBLEED][NOTHOUGHT][NOEXERT][NOPAIN][NO_EAT][NO_SLEEP][NOBREATHE] etc. Look them all up. However, this means that they will reproduce, unlike real undead creatures.

Not if they don't have no [CHILD:(age)] tags they won't.

You forgot to mention the fact that any skeletal (and maybe zombie) aquatic creatures will gain the ability to walk on land.  This is very bad if you happen to have skeletal carp.

Zombies are slow, can't die except from head/upper body/lower body being destroyed, and, of course, don't need to eat/drink/sleep. I think undead usually attack anything living, but I remember seeing wolf packs with zombie wolves 'living' alongside regular wolves.

Skeletons are the same, except they are as fast as their living counterparts, [SEVERONBREAK], have no organs (besides the spine), and are probably less damaged by heat or cold.

Also undead aquatic creatures will hunt you down and destroy everything you've ever loved.

I recall hearing something about zombies letting off little puffs of miasma?
