Failure to start.
« on: August 06, 2008, 09:19:24 pm »

When I try to run Dwarf Fortress, the window container (I suppose that's what you'd call it) will open and then Windows tells me that dwarfort.exe has stopped working. The details of the error aren't helpful to me, aside from the fact that it seems to be an issue with my video drivers. The errors are:

  Fault Module Name:   atioglxx.dll
  Fault Module Version:   6.14.10.7769
  Fault Module Timestamp:   486d907f
  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Offset:   0003e1b2

Immediately after that message is:

 Fault Module Name:   ntdll.dll
  Fault Module Version:   6.0.6001.18000
  Fault Module Timestamp:   4791a783
  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Offset:   000606cf

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, if that matters, and my video card is a Radeon 4850. I've verified that the drivers are up to date. I've also tried running DF in compatibility mode and with DEP disabled, as another thread had suggested, neither of which changed anything. If any more information is needed, I'd be happy to provide it.

Thanks!

I'm having this same issue.

I built a new computer last week. Intel Core2duo e8400, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD 4870, Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

I run the latest DF, the dialog pops up asking window or full screen. I answer window (full screen gives same result on a full black screen). As the main window opens, I get a 'dwarfort.exe has stopped working' dialog.

Have either of you tried downgrading Catalyst?

Other games appear to be experiencing the same crash with similar configurations, this seems to be a new unresolved 'feature' on ATI's part.

Aha, good idea. I didn't downgrade Catalyst in its entirety, but I extracted the atioglxx.dll file from the 8.6 install package and put it into the Dwarf Fortress directory. It started, at least!

For anybody wondering how you get the DLL, you'll need to download the Catalyst 8.6 package. I ran it and let it extract everything to C:\ATI and then cancelled the installer, but I'm sure you could open it up in 7Zip or a similar program to extract the files. Navigate to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-6_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_64790\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\B_64997 (or a similar directory, of course) and copy atioglxx.dl_ to your desktop. Then run a command prompt (start - run - cmd) and navigate to the desktop (cd desktop). Now type "expand atioglxx.dl_ atioglxx.dll" That should give you a dll file that you can then just move into your Dwarf Fortress directory.

That's what worked for me, anyway. Hopefully it'll work for others having similar problems without requiring a complete downgrade (which, incidentally, didn't go at all well for me).

Filcher, thanks! This solved the problem with my Radeon 9600Pro. I simply used the dl_ from an old ATI temp folder I had from previous driver installation, not sure of the version, but doesn't matter since it works. This was with [40c].
