1) Make some of them herbalists.
2) Make others planters (dedicated)
3) They are fed. More hauling hands => more free time for your legendaries.

If you just send them all to gathering plants, won't they be able to feed themselves? (And since that can be a dangerous profession, you might lose a few, too.)

Food is the only critical problem, right? Booze, too, to some extent, but plant gathering would also help with that. This might give you time to get settled, without giving up all that labor.

Just a thought...

I second the planter comment. Five dedicated Growers will produce more food than you will ever need. EVER. EVER EVER. Make another five dedicated brewers. Make the rest recruits, just in case.

If you still have too many, bear in mind that a 4-5 z-level drop is instantly lethal to most creatures. :P

I'm glad all the DF players are not living in one district. It'd be the most dangerous district for the whole world.
Actually, it'd be the most dangerous district in hundreds of thousands of worlds, starting with 'Xah Rabin' The Dimension of Omen.

You could also make them hunters.  This could bring in more food (though you'd need to have a butcher workshop, and you need to make sure you are gathering refuse from the outside, and preferably have a stockpile by the butcher for unrotten animals) but mostly it kills off some of your dwarves while training the survivors in wrestling, crossbows or hammer (depending on your supplies of crossbows and of ammo).  Sort of depends on the supply and dangerousness of your local wildlife.

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

How big are your fields?

It doesn't take that much space to keep people fed.

Have them inspect the underside of a drawbridge.

Cage traps in their own personal 1x1 room before they make friends. The lucky ones go insane :)

I recruit mine and station them on a retracting bridge jutting out over the refuse/graveyard pit.

Did i mention that the bridge is on the side of a 8 z-level high tower, and connected to a lever in my mayor's room at the top of said tower?

Whole thing is made of ice btw. The tower isn't meant to be very tall as it's supposed to be more of a keep.

Well, i only do that to glassmakers and soapers since theres no way to get glass (to work or make alchemist shops) on this glacier and i don't want them getting moods and going berserk in the middle of my meeting area.

Had quite a bit of goblin trouble recently too, used some migrants as bolt absorbers so that my legendary miners wouldn't have to worry about lucky shots to the heart.

...shots to the heart.
Now I can't get that Bon Jovi song out of my head.

Every useless looking dwarf that comes into my cities immediately gets fitted up with butchering, tanning, fish cleaning, and farming. They take care of themselves, even if it means that I eventually have half my population in brownjacks.

You should try the anarchist challenge sometime. Bring no supplies, no skills, and give no commands. You will find that its surprisingly easy to keep dwarves alive.

When you say "No commands", do you mean not to put jobs in the Job Manager? Just assign jobs at the various workstations, or what is meant by that? I'm not sure I follow.

It almost sounds like you would have your 7 dwarves under the sky, drinking from the river/stream/brook/pools, and eating whatever vermin they can catch when they are starving.

I'm sure I misunderstand.
