Marksdwarves and multiple stacks of bolts
« on: August 06, 2008, 04:25:45 am »

Usually my marksdwarves only carry around 1 stack of bolts, no matter how many are in the stack (which often leads to hilarity and tragedy). Sometimes, however, I've seen a smart marksdwarf who stuffs several smaller stacks into his quiver which add up to a larger number then he can normally get from 1 stack. For example, right now I have a marksdwarf with 5 stacks of bolts, adding up to 54 bolts. Of course, right next to him is a marksdwarf carrying a single stack of 2 bolts total.

So I'm not sure which the bug is - either marksdwarves are supposed to carry only 1 stack of bolts and somehow sometimes they stuff more in there, or they are supposed to fill the quiver up but sometimes forget and only stick 1 stack in.

It's possible it is somehow related to training, as every time I can remember them with multiple bolts only 1 stack has been metal and the others are bone/wood but considering the ratio of bone to metal bolts in my fortress I can't say that has anything to do with it for certain.

Edit: This might be  bug 637, if so I apologize for the duplicate report.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on.  They are supposed to generally respect themselves and carry about the right about, but it seems to be a total failure at this point.

Er, I'm a complete newbie at DF, but how can you see what bolts your marksdwarf is carrying? When I check their inventory, I just see the quiver, and I haven't noticed a command for looking inside it.

I might be able to do that from the stocks screen (I haven't thought to try), but I can't tell from that which dwarf is carrying which quiver.

Just wondering....

V to view the dwarf, I for the inventory, + or - to highlight the quiver, then ENTER to view it.  Should list its contents, in the same way that looking at a barrel or other container does.

I've tried that, but I never see anything. There are no bolts listed when I do this to my marksdwarves' quivers. Well, I've only tried it a couple of times, I guess. Then I just assumed that we couldn't see the crossbow bolts at all.

Maybe they just happened to have empty quivers when I looked. I don't know. I've got more than a thousand bolts in ammo storage, and they sure fire SOMETHING at targets and goblins.

Hmm,... I'll check this out again next time I play.

Thanks,

Bill

Keep in mind they use bone bolts for practice, and metal bolts otherwise. I think.

Mine use animal Bone Blots for practice and Goblin/Kobold Bones for Goblins/kobolds, Ya'd think they'd stop attacking after the second wave got pepped with arrows made out of the first wave,  eh well i'm not complaing they DID kill that moody merchant to get me this really nice Steel Crossbow...  8),

Oh and as for the stacks of blots i have no clue as my 3 (Yes THREE) Marksdwarves usually carry a couple stacks of 6... but never seen one with more than 30, (excluding the bolts he had sticking OUT of him counting those he had 35)
