Robots don't feel pain. And instead of axes robots use these spinning razor-sharp saw-edged discs on a handle. They work like axes, only they're far more brutal. I wonder if I should change their damage type to GORE instead of SLASHING.
The only energy weapons are powerblades which are basic swords with an energy field covering them. Size of a longsword, damage higher than a 2-hander. Messes up enemies pretty bad. There is also a chainblade variety for people with more bloody interests.

And no, it's a puppy.

11th Moonstone, Early Winter of 214
Overlord's log

I am usually opposed to direct confrontation. I really am. But today saw the limit of my patience. The wall was almost ready. One last hole was left open. Then the harpies came. A pair of them attacked one of our hunting drones and broke it down. After that they attacked FinDude. We retaliated immediately. All of us had the same reaction to some disgusting organic beast attacking one of our own. After the two first harpies had been disabled and disassembled, we sought out the rest of the flock which had taken residence around the magma pipe and destroyed them, too.
I have half a mind to order their remains thrown into the magma. But why waste protein? It would surely keep the flesh harvester happy and it gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that the organic scum who attempted to assault us will serve as fuel.
The forgebot, Aqizzar, has been busy turning the copper ore we have gathered into usable form. There's something off about that one. I will have to keep a close watch on him.
Hopefully we'll get a supply caravan this winter. We are in great need of more weapons. Our bare gripping claws will work against wild beasts, but should the goblins send raiding parties we would find ourselves out-equipped.
But not for long.

End of line.

24th Moonstone, Early Winter of 214
Overseer's log

We finally have an anvil. The forge has been set up next to the other magma furnaces and soon Aqizzar will begin forging us weapons. Once we receive more workers I will see to it that we will be properly armed and ready for when the goblins inevitably begin their raids.
We also have some steel from the recycling of broken drones. These will be used to make higher-quality weapons, after our forgebot has gained a little more experience in assembling weapons. I think I should order a few powerblades made. I'm not sure how he'll react, from what I have heard of him talking he seems to be a supporter of collectivism.
This could be a problem.

Whatever you do, keep your bots happy enough so that none go into a fell mood. Or else that one bot gets to murder the rest and his actions are sanctioned by the guards.

15th Obsidian, Late Winter of 214
Overlord's log

The topside compound is mostly secure. The drawbridge can keep almost all attackers away, apart from siege weapons and flying enemies. An armory has been build next to the wall and plans have been made to construct a walkway on the inside of the wall so gunbots can fire outside the walls.
Organics invaded the compound and stole practice ammunition from the armory. I posted Poltifar and FinDude in the compound and gave them orders to respond with extreme prejudice whether more of those damned monkeys try to enter. So they did. Poltifar proved surprisingly lethal with his freshly forge steel powerblade. He went completely berserk on them. Darkbot, who was setting up the armory walls was knocked down by the corpse of a macaque that was flung into him by Poltifar's blade.
Momaw, the drone mechanic seems to be malfunctioning severely. After the loss of a few of the drones he complained to me about some smoke the flesh harvester had released from the fire imp carcasses, as well as about the stench of rotten carcassess drifting through the stairwell. I shrugged him off, telling him it was merely a transitory phase. Since then he's become very melancholy and gotten into accidents. I don't think it's mere incompetence on his part. He's fallen down into the dry well twice now. I think he's attempting to break himself. If he is, then I don't really mind. We can find another drone mechanic, and recycling his remains will provide us with more steel. Such is the most effective way of dealing with malfunctioning units. He won't be missed.

26th Obsidian, Late Winter of 214.
Overlord's log

Momaw went offline today. The incessant whining from his broken speech synthesizer had stopped a while ago. Chaotic took his break in the meeting room and spotted Momaw's wrecked shell, slumped into a chair. He immediately notified me and I gave the go-ahead for Aqizzar to recycle him. Nobody was very surprised, Momaw had been severely damaged by his 'accidental' falls into the well. He had been seen crawling around with a broken motivator, but did not request help. I suppose everyone knew that he would be more useful recycled in the state he was in. Even if he was fixed, he would still have a malfunctioning CPU and would propably end up in the well a dozen times more.
Darkbot declared the cause of terminal failure to be overheating. The drone mechanic hadn't bothered to maintain himself properly, which propably was intentional. And so the first sapient machine in Steelgripped went offline and was melted down for its materials.
Fortunately, I have not seen signs of similar malfunctioning in the others. Nhipbot has been reassigned to guard duty by her own request. Our garrison now consists of two gunbots and a bladebot. I will have a word with Aqizzar about assembling more sawdiscs. They are solid multipurpose tools. And then we will wait for reinforcements. I hope they come before the goblins do.

End of line.

26th Granite, Early Spring of 215
Overlord's log.

Another supply caravan arrived. We traded for a few more fungal spores and some metals we don't have ourselves, as well as a new cleaner. In return we emptied all of our trinket bins onto their wagons. I am simply amazed by the requests we've been getting the past year. Every season they ask for less military equipment and more and more of useless garbage. Armor I understand and I can also understand that the Council might requisition backpacks for troops so they can carry supplies with them. I can even fathom that somewhere protein-rich organic fuel is required. But that is where it stops making sense. They ask for musical instruments, crowns and rings. For every type of military equipment I can offer they also demand useless trinkets. Although I can't expect anything more from them. They offer me more raw materials for trinkets, so I have to accept this. They've also shown some interest in construction materials, but I have to use all I have to fortify our position.
We haven't had any contact from other races yet, and the goblins haven't been spotted yet. Makes me wonder whether they will bother at all. Did I overestimate their willingness to attack a Doom Fortress of the Skewered Rip?
Do they have such fear of the Claws of Malice?
Do they not dare face the wrath of me, Overlord Gamma Relieveflayer?

Only time will tell. Until then, construction of the battlements continues more or less on schedule. It'll take a long time to expand enough for the moat plan to become viable. And then we will be nearly untouchable.

20th Slate, Mid-Spring 215
Overlord's log

Excellent news! Nagash, while out hunting, spotted reddish discoloration in a nearby cliff face. It was revealed to be hematite. At last we have iron! If we only had some flux we could begin steel production ourselves.
In addition, reinforcements have arrived. A full list follows:

1 stoneworker
1 carpenter
1 gunmaker
2 drone mechanics
2 protein processors
1 weaponsmith
1 metalworker
1 stonecrafter
1 craftsbot
1 engineer
1 plant harvester
2 sawbot recruits
3 unskilled laborers
2 uncalibrated

Plus a few lumps of walking protein.
A total of 20 new units fresh for work. Although I will have to do some reassigning. Our numbers more than doubled. It may be time for me to appoint a peacekeeper..

End of line.

21st Felsite, Late Spring of 215.
Overlord's log

The new workers are a welcome addition. Now we have more fuel processers, a few more forgebots and a larger military presence. I've divided the soldiers to two squads, the Old Storms, a close combat squad headed by that maniac Poltifar. He's got three sawbots with him to keep him alive. The other called the Duties of Luster consists of our railgunners, headed by Nhipbot, reassigned from mining operations. I should have someone else take up the drill.
I tested our gunbot squad's effectiveness by sending them out to take down two harpies that were harassing the miners gathering the hematite from the southern hills. They performed very effectively. The railguns can do massive damage from a distance before the enemy closes. And then they can take advantage over their natural advantage over organics: their resistance to blows and their higher strength. For now, The Old Storms will be patrolling the route to the dig site.
I should assign the newly promoted Forgemaster Aqizzar's crew to making reinforced plating for the gunners, to be on the safe side. Heavier armored plating will go to Poltifar's squad. They still need plenty of training, but already they are becoming highly effective against the local organics. They will make good practice targets. Hopefully there will be more challenging opponents in the future.
One day the might of Steelgripped will be feared.

End of line.

16th Hematite, Early Summer of 215
Overlord's log

Something quite extraordinary happened today. Humans came with wagons, right behind the quarterly caravan.
The liaison explained that the humans had taken interest in our resources and offered to trade.
Words cannot describe my hatred for them. Because we now had yearly caravans from the humans as well, the supply trains from the Council would cut down to yearly visits. They'll come visiting in winter, while the humans come in summer. This is infuriating. Do they really think I would stoop to trading with organic scum?
Oh yes, I will show them what the name of Overlord Gamma Relievedflayer means. But I cannot act now, while the liaison is watching. Next year, though, the humans will be coming alone. And who is to say whether they ever made it to Steelgripped?
There will be repercussions, but by then we will be ready. I discussed this with Nagash, whom I have appointed Sheriff. He agrees that this is the best course of action. The additional resources brought by these hapless merchants will make it unnecessary to waste time and space on producing certain materials.
Poltifar is becoming quite an asset. Two ogres had been approaching the area, disturbing the iron mining operation. I sent both squads to intercept them, just to make sure they were properly terminated. Poltifar made it there far ahead of the others and terminated both of them alone. Without armored plating or a deflector. I need to assign his squad to training. I hope there won't be any mishaps. After the ogres, he proceeded to terminate a werewolf caught by a pair of hunting drones. They were barely capable of keeping it still and received crippling damage. I hope that in the case they break down completely that Nagash won't do a repeat performance of Momaw's well-diving.

End of line.

You're already in, as a part of Poltifar's squad of homicidal killbots. Thing is, Poltifar always gets to the target before anyone else and hacks them to pieces. You have to respect someone who kills two ogres without having even novice skill with their weapon.
And we don't have laser axes, we have sawdiscs. I've assigned you to wield a shield and heavy armour as well.

:o heh, i never expected my bot to last so long :D well atleast, now that he is in the military, it is more likely that he would die in a spectacular and/or hilarious manner, instead of just being crushed by some cavein or somesuch :)
