Are there any drainage heightmaps on the net?

Gooood freaking question.  I think "drainage" is something Toady made up to figure out the differences between hills and grasslands that can't really be measured in the real world.

Best would be a water table depth map (i.e. measuring the distance below the surface where you find water: the deeper, the whiter your map).

I don't think there are easily accessible maps, but I've heard the term before, waaaay back in my GCSEs.

New version should be up this week, with map preview and other fun stuff.

Just wondering...is there going to be anything further done with this, or is it complete?

There'll be an update soon enough - I had to finish two of my university assignments over the last month.

The Update is a Cake! Lie!

Anyway, still having fun, this is easier that painting by hand.

Been a bit busy with holidays and exams and other whatnot, but I will get there eventually.

Current stymie - it's easy to display height in the preview as colours - below 0, and it's water and therefore blue, above it, it's green, and above a certain number, mountain and therefore white.

How would I represent the other parameter previews in colour?  Temperature would have colours for freezing and scalding, but drainage?  Savagery?  Does anyone know the boundary numbers before you get a clear cut change?

@eerr>>basically, that's what it does. granted, you could be tricky/unusual and create your own bmp for generation, but good luck if it's mostly noise. however, you CAN get near-perfect cliffs next to ocean this way. (although just painting a small area in the painter would probably be more effective :P)

this is a useful tool when used right. when used wrong, you'll get nothing out of it. <.<;;

Anone know - did the "using vista" issues get sorted out?
it doesn't seem to say in this thread.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Anyway. This is really great stuff! I'm working setting up a large world based on a height map of Middle Earth. Will post it here as soon at its done  8)

This was my first thought... how is it coming along?!?
I'm tempted to give it a try myself...  anybody else tried this?

Yeah, this looks //really// cool. Not that I personally have any idea how to get a height map or how to use this, but hell, I'm playing /dwarf fortress/ one of the few games rivaling Nethack for complexity (and I know Nethack players who won't touch DF for fear of it) - so really, I should be able to figure out how to use it. It might be nice to be able to generate maps without those damn smoothed cliff-faces at will. OCEAN CLIFFS FOR THE WIN.

Of course, I've never figured out how to use the 'map editor' toady offered in place of the worldgen parameters either, so.

Sorry this may be a stupid question, but how are the pixel values scaled to DF?
For example, all pixel values must be 0-255, but in DF the world-gen temperature values run from -1000 to +1000... does this mean a pixel of 128 = 0 degrees in DF?  How does this work for each of the map types?

I hate to bump things, but I've been looking for something like this - only to have my optimism and enthusiasm crushed (overly dramatic) by the fact that the DFFD download doesn't seem to work anymore. Other DFFD downloads work fine, however.
Can somebody upload this somewhere else, or is there a way to fix the download?
Thanks.
