awesome/ridiculous idea
« on: August 04, 2008, 02:44:41 pm »

So I had an idea to build a fort in a completely flat area and tunnel out a slope starting at least 20 tiles from the fort, going one tile closer each Z level down.  In the end creating this:
Code: [Select]
side view

______                      _____________                    _____
        \                   |            |                   /
          \                 |            |                 /
            \               |            |               /
              \             |            |             /
                \           |            |           /
                  \         |            |         /

etc, only much, much bigger.  the pillar in the center will be atleast 25x25

There would be a stretch of land connecting the pillar on one side to the mainland, part of which would eventually be removed and replaced with a bridge.  The fortress would be contained in the pillar, and then on balconies sticking out of the sides if expansion is needed.  ideally I would like to fill the bottom z level or two of the pit with magma, but depending on the map that may not be possible.  getting a flat map with no auqafier, and some kind of farmable layer and/or a brook at the edge I could eventually use for irrigation would be the priority.

Go for it. Or even use multiple towers.

Just be sure to measure twice and cut once when it comes to liquids, or have a handy chasm. Then be sure to keep supports for the constructed bridge, because building them can take a while even with the new mass-builder.

Also, have all the supports rigged in a way as to allow for a quick collapse, isolating your fortress. And make a structure on top of the colum wider than the colum itself.

 Make this thing EPIC.

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

'Twould be neat, if you have the patience to pull it off. Bonus points for positioning the pillar so that there is a magma pipe or a pit in the middle.

Speaking of magma pipes, if you dig the entrance to the bottom of the spire instead of the top, you can have a Boatmurdered-style Doomsday Device with relative ease.

if I find a safe way to deal with açuifers (IE: dumping magma on unwanted açuifer bits till they are gone, or somehow collapse them into oblivion (sp?)), that is. If not, I´ll keep with my original plan of building several skyscraper towers. And then somehow channel both water and magma to two big reservoirs at the top of the map, which would serve as a weather control device.

This is quite close to my idea (One several other people have had, as well) for building Rapture: A number of towers hollowed out of the terrain, then the area around them is flooded.  Hopefully you can get some glass going so your dwarves can look out.  Maybe a big window in your dining hall.  I'm not sure how windows would interact with magma, though.

It's like you're all trying to outdo each other in sheer useless pedantry.

I started working on it last night, it's slow going as digging ramps kills my fps for some reason.  I have magma, but no water on my map I hope no one get's hurt.  I plan on digging a tunnel over to the magma pool and filling the bottom 2-3 z levels of the pit with magma, and then building my forges on platforms built over the magma.

The pillar is 25x25 and the pit starts at 30ish tiles out and moves in from there.  I will try and upload the map once I am finished with the digging.
