I have an idea for a variant on the HFS: The Hole in the World.

Picture this: Your dwarves are mining along, when suddenly...

"Urist MinerCrystal cancels Mine: Hole in the World."
"Cog OtherMiner cancels Mine: Hole in the World."
"You find a massive hole. Oh no..."

Upon finding the 5*5 hole, it promptly excavates and destroys anything above and below it. And it steadily gets wider and wider and wider...

You put a hole in the world. You broke The Realm of Pregnancies. Nice job breaking it, hero.

And it keeps growing even when it eats your fort. It shows up in legends and eventually will cover the world (~50 years)

The only way to stop it is to enclose it in a steel or adamantine ring...

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

That'd kinda ruin the fun of keeping your fort, reclaiming, or going back in adventure mode.

If it's possible to stop it, I support vaguely similar concept. Doesn't have to be within one fort life, but destroying a world irrevocably should only happen through ignorance, negligence or sheer force of will. :)

I have noticed a rather mixed reaction with microcline, but what do people think of olivine?
Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.
Wait, what?

If it's a critter I can kill, or a doorway to Somewhere Else, then I'm for it, but I wouldn't want the "swallows the universe up all gone" thing.

Maybe a couple of tiles here and there, if I can stop it really quickly.

What if it just expands a random amount, maybe 5-20 tiles, and then stops. That would still be enough to screw your fort but not gamebreaking/end of the whole universe level.

Kind of like a sinkhole or something.

Wouldn't be so bad if it ate a constant number of tiles each time period.  The number of tiles eaten would grow linearly, then.  However, the radius of the hole would only grow by the square root of the number of tiles consumed.  It would be really bad to begin with, but would become more manageable as time passed by.  If it had a growth rate of 1 or 2 tiles per month or so, then it could be quite reasonable.

I don't care how slowly it happens - I don't want some simple mining accident resulting in the inevitable destruction of my entire plane of existence with no way to stop it.

So what if it only grows to a certain size, say the same as a bottomless pit, and then starts vomiting miasma and chaotic cosmic horrors into your fort and causing random mutations in anything that comes near it.

Maybe there should be a way to stop it. Perhaps involving some god? Sacrifice? God-killing?

And maybe it should stop, too. But it should at least knock out a good portion of the map. 1/4 - 1/3 perhaps? Miasma and cosmic horrors isn't a bad idea either. As long as they start laying siege to places. The hole should be The End of The World As The Dwarves Know It And Maybe The Humans Too But Defenitely The Elves And The Goblins. But balance that with a 1/66 chance of being from a HFS. Which is already low odds.

And a new Age too: "The Age of the Pit"

Would never be implimented.

Not only is a "black hole hole in the world" not even remotely fun, it would just make the player abandon his goals for the world gen and make another.

Not fun, not realistic, not even close to what the developers are going for.

It'd be cool if it kept expanding, but didn't just make a hole. It could be a massive chain of blighted spires standing up amid a a huge expanse of bottomless pit. Add in the constant chaos and miasma, and it's an interesting idea.
