Yea, put me on the list  ;D.

Why not just set the population hard cap to 7? That should make, for example, only 1 migrant will come if there's 6 Dwarfs, right?

Sadly, no. The game throws at you a whole migration of dwarfs, not just one. The pop cap is a cut off point for migrations, not dwarfs.

Also, could someone reiterate how this game will play out?

Once one or more dwarves die it is likely we will get a migration, this will mean there are likely to be more than 7 dwarves. At this point we can admit new players if anyone wants to join. Apart from that, what RPharazon wrote is basically exactly right.

Also, I am in a different timezone to most of you guys so it wasnt a day off, I was probably asleep when you posted that.

Since we're making this hardcore I say we start at a goblin fortress. You get enemies quicker that way but you also are guaranteed to have plenty of trade goods for the first year without having to spare someone to craft them. You also get obsidian. In any case, I say we start without an anvil. I'd like my guy to have:
Weaponsmithing 1
Armorsmithing 3 (I'd like to be the armorer)
Hammerdwarf 2
Shield User 2
Armor User 2

In addition I'd like an copper pick to begin with. I'll help mine until we can get a forge up and running. Though once we can get a smelt going I'd be fine smelting. With the other points I'd like 1 log (For my bed) and a trained wardog (to be assigned to me). In the very beginning I'd be happy to get a Bismuth Bronze warhammer and leather armor to go help clear out the goblins. We don't need to clear out all three towers... just one. The others we can wall off. But we will need to clear out any goblins in the open, lest they kill off merchants or our liason.

I was thinking of something more along the lines of a 7 man adventure mode game and less of an actual fortress building game. I want to make a cool story that we can write up and maybe start with a goal, like the dwarves go to this inhospitable place to find some super magic item which is rumoured to be buried here, and then we just dig and dig until everything goes horribly wrong. The thing about the liasons getting killed in a goblin fortress is fine it just makes it harder. Ideally we would start in a goblin fortress on a glacier with no trade routes at all and no wildlife to unt. This would of course be certain death unless we can mod goblins to be butcherable (which could be fun) but the point is that we can write a cool story about the thoughts and feelings of the dwarves when they realise their death is near and all their dreams are lost.

I can start any time now as long as no one else wants to specify their starting gear. We can happily leave a space blank as the first ones probably wont get that past 2 or 3 years anyway. One dwarf can remain unclaimed and up for grabs to the next poster.

I will leave this a little while longer and maybe try generating some more worlds to find something really fun, but if you want your dwarf customised in any way other than just having your name let me know now

Intimidator - 4
Conversationalist - 1
Pursuader - 3
Butcher - 2

I think my guy's back story would be along the lines of an adventurous professional torturer.

Essentially useless.  ;D

So I am going to attempt a start. I have a pretty cool area.

+Exerpt: The diary of Drunken Berkol

1st Entry,
At last we are ready to set off. This diary will be the record of the our parties adventures in what will be a crowning moment in the history of the dwarves of the Cyclopean world. The King of The Tatooed Daggers has commanded me to take a small party of dwarves southwest. It is rumoured that in some mountains there is buried the lost legendary tomb of the King of the Ancients. The rumours of the treasure there are staggering.

I was commanded to take Salmeuk Udibneth with me. Although I don't agree with many of the policies of the Tatooed Daggers and I regret that hhis profession should even exist, it will at least be useful to have someone who knows how to butcher and preserve animal corpses. I believe at least his patriotism should keep him under control, as long as the stress of the wilds don't prey on us too much. I belive his job here is to make sure we all bring the treasure back in its entirety and don't attempt to keep any for ourselves.

I have also chosen to bring along Paulus Fahlstrom Godenilir, a very useful fellow who will not only be able to help me dig for the tomb but is also deadly at using the same pick against dangerous creatures. In addition he meay be able to make wepons and armour for the rest of us if we come across the right materials.

The other members of the party are RPharazon Inodgoden with his crossbow and skill with stoneworking, Haven Stinthädtad for his axe, Kashyyk Sitaleshton for another crossbow, and Litast Ritharoddon Because He is not very clever and does what he's told.

I am somewhat worried about the small amount of equipment the quartermaster has assigned us, I tried to press the matter but to no avail.

We leave tomorrow.

*5th Granite
We have reached the spot I that was described on the map that the old man in the market sold me, it is not exactly as drawn, I think the map is quite innacurate. I heards some strange noises last night. But the area looks like a normal mountainside. Maybe it was just hoary marmots.

I think I will call this place Ushatnulral (Basementstable) for obvious reasons. We begin digging in the morning.

*7th Slate

We have found Iron or and some gems, the digging is going a head as planned. I have ordered the animals apart from the dog to be killed for meat and crossbow bolts. Kashyyk says he can make pretty good bolts from the animals bones.

*6th Hematite

We have run out of alcohol. This is a pretty grim proposition I don't know if I can be bothered digging this whole mountain out without beer. I have told Litast to collect plants from the valley and brew them into some form of alcohol for us.

The enormity of the task we have embarked on has begun to sink in. We have dug deep into the mountain and apart from native platinum which is something of treasure in itself, we have found no trace of the tomb or the treasure.

*16th Sandstone
We have had few kobolds causing trouble but have dispatched them quite quickly, some of their gear and some totems made by Kashyyk (quite nice ones I might add) bought us some more food from the Dwarven autumn caravan. There are many natural treasures in this mountain but my hands are getting tired from digging for the greatest treasure.

*16th Sandstone
Today Haven put down his axe for a moment to help bring some things to the trade depot and it was stolen. Having seen how he wields it I think we should make it a priority to make or buy a new one, unfortunately without an axe we can't cut wood to burn in the smelter and forge. Hopefully the lignite is enough

*23rd Moonstone
The kobold ambush caught us all off guard, they came down from above our entrance hall. All the dwarves that could fight ran for their weapons and the raid was repelled. In the melee however Kashyyk was killed. Apart from that there was not much damage, Haven broke one of his fingers (you should have seen the face of the kobold he broke it on) and one of the dogs had its leg broken. We will mourn the loss of Kashyyk, and without the steady hand that fired the bone bolts he so lovingly crafted I fear the security of our fort is as much a loss as our friendship.

*8th Obsidian
We all laughed at  Paulus for brining wood along to make his own bed but now that we have no wood and it is the only bed in for miles he is getting quite upset that everyone keeps sleeping in it without asking. He allows haven at least because he is injured (although bedrest is not especially important for a broken finger). We have built up basic forging operations and Paulus says it shouldn't be a problem to make a basic axe from what we have. The digging has stopped becuase of the kobolds and other problems but I hope to start again soon. So much for being home for christmas though this is like looking for a needle in a haystack. We all still miss Kashyyk

Sorry Kashyyk :-(

I still reckon this area is pretty safe. If you look at the 'U' screen the list of angry beasties is as long as your arm but they are all safely stashed in places that have no access to the surface.

The loss of Kashyyk was really bad luck they appeared right above the entrance way and as I drafted him the kobolds were between him and his crossbow so he got interrupted on the pickup task and went in with his fists. I have assigned him the spare character Litast at the moment he's the herbalist and brewer. We will need a new bone carver.

So I take it it's Haven's turn now?

Looked at the map. I think it looks great. I'm sure we'll get some more challenging stuff come in before too long. I'm looking forward to my turn. Provided I'm still alive at that point.

No he asked to go near the end. Its RPharazon next on the list but if someone wants to swap with him they I don't mind.
I'm going to bed now so the OP won't get updated for a while.

Better update that kill list, Drunken... This could become highly entertaining...

Disjointed scribblings of Haven Stinthadtad...

Been a year in this heap. No sign of a tomb or any dwarf-made treasures. Platinum vein, and some iron. It'd be a nice place for a little settlement to spring up, but for now I guess platinum goblets and chairs for everyone... I should suggest that to RPharazon. It'd do to help morale around here I guess, and he's taking charge now that Drunken's stepped down. Dunno why, maybe Kashyyk's death got to him. Busted a finger on a kobold trying to drag the dwarf out of the mess, but it wasn't any use. Thing hurts like hell, too. The writing is nice, keeps my mind off it, though I dunno if it's legible. Lucky my good hand made it out all right... Can't help but feel that if I'd just kept a better eye on that axe...

To the rocky depths with all that, I'm going to try and sleep this blasted pain away.

Right, if nobody has any objections, I'll be starting my turn now.
Sorry I couldn't arrive sooner but I don't usually visit the forum. Just the IRC channel. ;)

Journal updates will come when I finish the turn. Should be soon, maybe in a few hours or tomorrow.
