Wrestlers...who mine?
« on: August 03, 2008, 09:26:29 pm »

I drafted an immigrant miner to my wrestler corps. His compatriots worked their way up to champion status, and he...didn't. Instead, he has so far made it to a respectable skill level in wrestling and shield using. Curiously though, he, while not mining, has become a legendary miner. What gives?

He was probably using his pick as a weapon, as most miners do, and that does, if memory serves, train mining skill.

Using a pick always uses the mining skill. I think of wrestlers as the "Other" category when it comes to weapons, and not eye-gouging corps.

If he had the "mining" labor enabled when he was drafted, the "unarmed" in his soldier preferences actually has him fighting with his pick and thus sparring will use that skill.  To get rid of it, deactivate him, disable the "mining" labor and reactivate him.

Though it's much more effective to have him keep the pick.

Except he doesn't learn how to dodge, which is often the reason to train wrestling in the first place - to improve evasion both when sparring with lethal weapons and in actual combat.

Really? I figured they'd learn how to do that when sparring in general.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys. I suppose I'll need to get him to drop the pick, as I did want him to be a legendary wrestler - so I could then train him to be a super elite hammerdwarf.

If you make him a 'lord' of a weapon or an 'elite' wrestler he won't be able to mine anymore.

Actually, it'd be the most dangerous district in hundreds of thousands of worlds, starting with 'Xah Rabin' The Dimension of Omen.

Rather irritaing you can't you use that screen to change their weapons when they reach elite, going through the military menu can be irritating (when preventing him from going somewhere you don't want him to by changing weapons).

The main bug with that is the inability to assign war dogs.  What good is a military dwarf without a swarm of dogs around him??

I just think it's funny when your random dwarf gets pissed at a group of zombie groundhogs, and i suddenly a competent wrestler, with minor brain damage...
Also, one guy got his eye poked out by some faggety zombie creature, and he fell unconcious, nobody carried him to his bed, he just starved to death where he fell, and no one even burried him! Maybe he was an 'untouchable'
is there a caste system in DF?

So...  legendary miner, wielding a masterwork adamantine pick, does not count as a hero and can be transferred in and out?
Awesome!

Yes, and probably does a crapton of damage with the pick.  It's worth looking into.

Except that you'd lose your legendary miner probably, because they don't naturally get armor skill.

But how long does it really take to get another legendary miner?
