Evolving Cultures
« on: August 03, 2008, 12:41:03 pm »

I think it'd be neat to have cultures evolve during world gen. Right now, a Civ has the exact same Ethics and Spheres at the end of world gen as it does at the beginning, regardless of what happens.

I'd like to see some cultural merging and evolution over time, especially as different races are assimilated into the culture over time. I can't see that a goblin civ populated and run mostly by dwarves is going to be the same culture after a 1000 years. Especially if they have friendly/trade contact with actual dwarven civilizations. I don't think it should transform completely, necessarily, but I think idea exchange should occur.

This would probably mesh best with the idea of having cultures randomly generated based on racial characteristics. Goblins, for example, are prone to randomly murdering one another. I think that's a sort of inherent evilness to them. Humans, being very flexible and naturally violent, would probably take to that culture very well. Elves and Dwarves, probably not. So an Elf or Dwarf in a goblin Civ would probably have a lower chance of actually initiating a murder. And would probably be much less forgiving of someone who kills a friend or family member. If that civ ends up with a very high % of Elves or Dwarves, I think the overall civ attitude should shift more towards the inherent attitudes of those races.

Of course, the one caveat here is Goblin civs still rules by Demons. I think they should be able to twist the members of thier civs to be more evil. Maybe even have the game dynamically generate a new raw entry for the corrupted version of the species, with new inherent ethics. And maybe LIKES_FIGHTING or something similar, if the race didn't already have that. It'd be a neat way to have the game generate 'Dark Elves' and such, as it were. They'd still be called Elves or Dwarves, but they'd have a new entry called 'CORRUPTED ELVES' or whatnot.

Maybe the flip side could do that same? Perhaps good powers/regional forces could have an impact on races who didn't worship them originally. Have Dwarves living in an elven civ start to show more respect to nature over time.

Thoughts?
