[39e]Dwarves going outside when ordered to stay in
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:21:23 am »

I got my self a siege and set orders so that only soldiers can go outside, but some of my dwarves that had no job went outside too. I think they cancelled their jobs when they couldn't go outside and then just wandered there.

Didn't happen when I reloaded a save just at the begining of the siege, but I did notice some of the dwarves with their store in the stockpile order got over 20 squares outside before canceling and comming back.

And I should add that dwarves 5 to 10  squares away from the safety of the fortress manage to run away into the wilderness when they see the enemies comming. One way there is a fortress with enough traps to smear the whole siege on the walls and the other way there is wilderness and the little guys decide to run for the hills. They must really like being chased by goblins through the forrest.

You have discovered the unfortunate entrance dance.  It's not a bug in the sense that it is accidentally miscoded; the algorithm that is used is well understood and is working as intended.  It's just that, as a feature, it could probably stand to operate differently.  There have been various suggestions for how to fix it in the suggestions forum quite often.  I suspect Toady will get around to it sooner or later, but when and how is anybody's guess.

This is a known issue of sorts.  Seeing a goblin interupts all jobs, including "stay inside" and they run in a direction that most directly takes them away from danger.

The workaround for this is to have the entrance be a good deal away from where the actual combat is, such as building a large courtyard to protect the area from the entrance to your fort to the bunker protecting the main gate where all your soldiers are. In order for a civilian to reach the main gate, they have to both go outside and travel 20+ steps, which means the entrance dance doesn't put any of them in any risk.
