who need sieges when this happens

About 3-4 ambushes within a few minutes. Thankfully the caravan was still here which helped on a first 1-2 ambushes. then when cleaning it all up two more pop up but my only champion marks squad takes em both out. Nice thing is no dead for me or the caravan, can't say the same for the gobs... oh well this more or less cleaned out the ambushers...

Damn it more ambushes as I type and now I've had a planter die. updates after I post this.
edit: whew nearly lost a soldier in training when he accidentaly went outside but when I turned him to civilian he ran right by the tower where my marksdwarves are, my champion markdwarves. So lost one planter and a few dogs (they accually took out most of one squad). Lets hope during cleanup and getting the rest of the wood inside i don't get anymore gobs.

I've gotten stacked ambushes before.  Wiped out most of my military - I wasn't prepared for one ambush at the time, let alone several. ::)

Thankfully, they did eventually take care of it, and all the (narrow <whatever>) made for excellent trade fodder.

I'm glad all the DF players are not living in one district. It'd be the most dangerous district for the whole world.
Actually, it'd be the most dangerous district in hundreds of thousands of worlds, starting with 'Xah Rabin' The Dimension of Omen.

Yeah, getting a second ambush while half your fort is failing to fend off the first is really, really... fun. Fortunately my military managed to get their butts into gear and dealt with the problem.

Buying out an entire caravan for the first time ever with a massive surplus of (narrow cave spider silk <item>) is quite satisfying.

I was usually prepared for ambushes by the time they happened in all my .38c vintage forts. However, in the new version, i assumed that since it said the goblins were at peace, nothing would happen, and i diverted my manpower to mining projects.

I found out that group of drafted miners can make half decent fighters.

Agreed Ive had this only 1 time sadly, but it was awesome indeed. Ive lost lot of Dwarves, and that rarely happens usually.  ;D

After I posted this I had yet another ambush or two last night but was forced to savescum due to unfavorable conditions and my brother wanting to get on the computer (he works all day long and his laptop is broken so I kinda haveto give it up). Heres a quick picture with 3 more gob bodies off screen (gonna accualy play a little later rather than now).

I found out that group of drafted miners can make half decent fighters.
Legendary miners armed with only their pick make excellent warriors, I found out recently.

My situation: my fortress was progressing nicely, and I had a moat plus a drawbridge protecting my entrance, and two wardgogs by the bridge to warn me of any sneakers coming across. It is the only entrance, so thieves would need to get across there.

However, I hadn't realized that dogs won't give a warning until enemies are upon them. In this case, a six-gob ambush party, already across the bridge and atop my dogs. My three archers were either sleeping, eating or drinking, and all my wrestlers were sparring in barracks. I activate all the squads and prepare for battle. There's a human caravan inside the fort and the gobs would need to pass that before getting to my civvies, so I am not too concerned.

A expected the goblins make short work of my wardogs, but they don't enter the fort, instead they climb uphill past the gate, to get to f5-6 dwarves incoming with wood hauling jobs. The soldiers won't make it in time to save them.

All is not lost! A legendary miner is close by, destroying natural ramps off hillsides. I draft him and set him on the gobbos from their rear. First to feel his wrath is the goblin archer, well behind its comrades. It goes down very quickly, possibly a hit to some vital spot, and the miner turns his vengeful pick against the other gobs, rescuing a dwarf that is down and out and tormented by a lashmaster.

In the end, the miner kills all six gobs in very short order, not getting a single scratch despite wearing nothing but some x(cloth stuff)x. The soldiers arrive at last, their job just being to count the number of goblin corpses. Losses on my side: zero dead, one gravely injured hauler (he survives his wounds eventually).

I am thinking of retiring his copper pick and placing it into the temple of Armok, next to the artifact idol. Too bad I can't name the tool.

I've got about 10 captives total including a snatcher that showed up and I'm in the process of killing them all. 

edit: ooo  apparently one of the captives I just killed was a local leader, does that mean I might get sieges now?

In some ways these 'multiple ambushes' are more dangerous than sieges because the attackers can come from many directions at once, so your military has to either be divided into smaller groups to cover all avenues, or they have to keep running from side to side to meet new waves of attackers.

I've discovered that legendary miners aren't such good soldiers when there's a marksgoblin in amongst the ambushers that I didn't notice until ohgodmyminerisdead.

In some ways these 'multiple ambushes' are more dangerous than sieges because the attackers can come from many directions at once, so your military has to either be divided into smaller groups to cover all avenues, or they have to keep running from side to side to meet new waves of attackers.
Not if you only make one way to your fortress.  This is why I usually channel out a singular path to the front gates and build roads on it so the caravans always have access.  This also affords a way to set up a "gauntlet" of archers for the goblins to get through before actually reaching your front door.  It's also beneficial for a ballista to fire down one path of road.  In order to keep dwarves in (such as the woodcutters) I actually dig/channel out a huge protected outdoor area for them to gather from.

"Having faith" that the bridge will not fall, implies that the bridge itself isn't that trustworthy. It's not that different from "I pray that the bridge will hold my weight."

I can testify to the miners thing. I only had two miners at my first ambush at my first (now abandoned due to FPS issues) fort in 39.whatever, and, knowing that miners were apparently as adept at mining faces as mining rock, I set them to defend the entrance. One went into a martial trance and subsequently massacred the green menace, with the other dwarf playing backup to whatever he didn't pierce in the head/abdomen.

Unfortunately, Mr. Martial Trance got a broken arm and would have died of starvation/thirst had I not abandoned due to the combined frustrations of a migrant wave shortly after that and trying to get to the cave river I knew was on the map only to discover that there were more nasties in there than my lack of military could handle. I also dipped rather low on the FPS and just decided to let it go at that point. There was also the minor matter of having embarked on a terrifying area and the most terrifying thing I saw were skeletal groundhogs. Now I'm set up on a terrifying tundra, and the regular herds of skeletal elk and muskox are much more satisfying.
