What A Rubbish Dragon
« on: August 02, 2008, 08:05:18 am »

Ok, I just had the most exciting time in my whole time playing Dwarf Fortress, I had a Dragon attack for the first time EVER

So, I got all my dwarves inside, manned the fortifications, got the military ready, all for a giant confrontation.

I waited and waited for about 5 minutes with nothing happening, and I thought, "What's taking this Dragon so long?"

I zoomed onto it, and it turns out it was caught in a cage trap outside...

Talk about Anti-Climax

I don't really know what I should do with it now, any ideas?

Rig up a trap-corridor arrangement and a series of levered floodgates. The general principle is goblins are let into the entrance hall, levers are pulled and floodgates reshape the path from a straight line to an otherwise self-contained area with the dragon in it. Just make sure there are some cage traps in there to get hold of it again.

Set up an elf decontamination area?
Or perhaps a happy fun times noble room with a locked door and a lever to the cage?

....They just refuse to stay down unless butchered, in which case their skins will haunt you until you subdue and tan them. Never has legendary butcher and legendary tanner seemed so valueable as in this release.

That's a good idea

"I WANT 50 MILLION MASTERWORK ADAMANTINE STATUES!!!"

"Have a Dragon instead..."

If you have the dungeon master and the dragon didn't kill any of your dwarves, you can PROBOBLY tame it. Unfourtunatly, War Dragons need to be modded in if you want them, but otherwise they would work well. Especially when they use firebreath on a horde of goblins. And your dwarves.

Hehe.

Nice I had one also back in time. Btw be careful with it. If some creatures are attacking, and the dragon will spot them, he will more than likely use firebreath first. :D ..now if some dwarves are getting hit with it, they will burn also and not just the enemies.  :-X [in the vanilla game at least, but modding can do wonders if needed. ;D]

 1. Make a vault with an entance hall and heavy metal doors.

 2. Store only the most valuable things in there. Artifacts, masterwork items, coils, everything.

 3. Chain the dragon to the entrance hall.

 4. Kobold thieves come to the fortress.

 5. ???

 6. Profit!

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

One second, even if my Dragon is tame, it will still attack hostiles?

The Arena just got more interesting  ;)

Taming a dragon and getting it to attack hostiles seems inappropriately safe. Try rigging up a separate passage to your fortress for the dragon to live in. Then, when attackers come, close your main entrance and open the entrance to the dragon-passage. For bonus points, put some treasure in its lair.

PS: since I'm so sleepy when I read this, I saw "rubbish dragon", and instantly thought of a dragon made of rubbish from the refuse pile.... eg, kitten bone body, goblin head, decayed dwarf legs, etc

I've heard that tame creatures aren't so good at defending themselves.

I havent noticed this. I remember my tamed dragon was hardcore. He was killing all enemies, but sadly some of my dwarves managed to stand in the way of the dragonbreath occasionally. Anyways it was fun to watch. ;D
Btw I am wondering, how come that tamed creatures dont need any food/drink? Isnt that a bit erm...weird?

Their zeal for serving their masters sustains them, I guess.

I think that's more people expecting dragons to be tougher then they actually are.
