Dwarven capture the flag.
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:05:29 am »

Have you ever played or heard of CTF? Obviously the answer to that is probably definitely yes.

I have been playing a lot of CTF lately and a lot of Dwarf fortress as well. What if these to games were mixed?
My idea was to set up a custom arena where my specially trained dwarfs can play capture the flag with a twist. My theory is that I would use siege operators as the defenders, and crazed hauling peasants as the attackers. At one end of the arena will be team one's base. This includes ballistas, ammo and the flag (a piece of furniture in a stockpile). At the other end of the arena will be team two's base. This will have a chunk of stone in their stockpile as a flag. Make sure both of these items are a similar weight. Team ones attackers will  have stone hauling enabled, with everything else disabled. Similarly with team two's attackers have furniture hauling enabled.

When you are ready for the carnage, set all defenders to fire at will in their ballistas. Delete both stockpiles containing the flag and replace with the opposite. The haulers will rush out to get their 'flag' and try to bring it back to their base while ballista arrows are being fired all around them. Let hilarity and carnage ensue.

Take bets on the two competing teams and watch as they duke it out.

Discus.

I am currently in the middle of a succession game, but after my turn I will have to try this out. I am pretty sure it will work.

A statue, preferably made from a precious metal like gold, platinum, or aluminum would make a perfect "flag", also a perfect trophy.

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

If you want even more fun set random spike traps around the place with a lever set to repeat or maybe pressure pads.

have lava under the arena with grates opening and closing periodically whilst some of the free spaces are taken up by spikes also being tiggered. would be great for gobbos to ith the other end leading out.

love the idea

This sounds awesome: but surely each team will only send one hauler to retrieve their objective "flag"?

"It's cool, guys. I've got this one!"

...and there must be some way of boosting the peasants' chances against the engineers (assuming they have weapons)?

Make a pressure plate activate random spikes 10 or 20 tiles away. Make some drop supported stone. Make some drop gobbies!

They are pleasents! Give then shields and let them Run!

(King of the Hill anyone? 2 Seige Groups. One from one side, one from another. Make seige point at the other 'enemy spawn' side and let it rip!)

h, Nessing is cool and all. And Civilization goes from stone to steam punk, but nothin'' beats a good dose of Fanaticialism to Dwarf Fortress and a load of Dwarfen Rum!

Nothing to damage the flags, mind you. Spikes are good but falling rock may be harmfull to your statue-flags. Water flooding would be cool. With carp. Goblins would be messy to clean up. Catapults and ballistae are a major yes. Leave some blind spots, tho. It's take forever to make enough ballistae bolts to make a half dwarf year game..

Use DF Companion so you can have Dwarves vs. Goblins/Elves CTF matches.

:P, sorry about that. I have failed English class for three years running, consider yourself lucky that I am using a Firefox spell checker.
