You guys don't use custom nicknames and professions already?

I'd never be able to keep track of my fortress without giving everyone a custom profession. There's no way I can keep track of which Unib is the brewer and which is the farmer without custom naming.

Why bother?

I pick one or two guys for each profession where skill really matters (like craftsmaking, weapon/armor smithing, masonry and so on). Usually I pick someone who had a mood already so I don't lose all my training if he wants a rare gem. I give him a custom profession name, then restrict workshops to him only and shut off his hauling.

Everyone else is just haulers. Once someone gets legendary in a skill, they can churn out goods so fast there is no point in having more then one. A single legendary rock crafter making mugs can tie up the other 199 dwarves hauling him rocks and taking his mugs away, easy.

Don't have to worry about mucking about with everyone's professions or nicknames or labor menu or anything else this way.

I don't ever make custom professions. Even with Dwarf Foreman, the only thing I did was to turn off hauling for all professions and add the special profession "coolie" to do that.

Once this sorta thing gets properly integrated in the game, it'll be pretty useful though.

Works just fine for me on WinXP... Great help, especially since I already have a habit of giving my Dwarves custom job titles.

Those of you who can use the program,

Do you have the Cygwin Unix-like utilities installed?

My copy of addr2line.exe is part of Cygwin.  It appears to be part of the Cygwin binutils package.

Those who are really anxious to use Dwarf Foreman could install Cygwin http://www.cygwin.com  , but I would actually recommend against it unless you have prior experience with Unix-like operating systems.  (Their installer has a terrible user interface.)

If you do choose to install Cygwin, you will want at least the core-utils and binutils packages.

Mine works at home and I don't have cygwin installed, I do have msys and mingw which is 'similar'.

It didn't work at work though and I have them both installed there too along with visual studio so I not sure how much help that is.

In my case, no. At least not that I am aware of. Being a Windows and Debian user, I am since a long time back resigned to only being vaguely aware of what is running on my machine and why.

Actually, I stopped having any kind of control over that when I moved from DOS. Ah, progress.

Sorry to bump an old thread (but hey, this utility is awesome, and deserves a bump imo), but I was wondering if something could be added to Dwarf Foreman: the ability to load/save entire profiles.  It would be nice to be able to easily change every dwarf in the fortress in to a hauler (that is, nothing but hauling enabled) and then turn them all back in to their custom job setups, without having to go through each job in turn and painstakingly turn everything off and then on again.

This is the single most useful DF utility there is imho.

As long as this is bumped... any chance of getting it to work consistently on Windows?

Nuts, this still doesn't work for me. Should we consider it abandoned till the new version comes out?
