An odd problem has cropped up recently. Here and there the first letter(s) are simply missing from words. Diorite simply shows up as Iorite. Dog just says Og. Horse is Orse.

You get what I mean.

Sounds sorta like a botched graphics tileset.

Not if the game actually capitalizes the second letter of the word - that's an indication that the game is actually forgetting the first letter, instead of just a tileset not showing it.
