So I was sitting here puttering around my fortress like I usually do and then I started putting things together in my head.


What if.... You extract Liquid Fire from a fire snake...craft a a hollow ballista head at the masonry. And make a hollow-point ballista bolt filled with liquid fire Fiery d00m against goblins.

Well, if clay is made into Dwarf Fortress you can make Clay Catapult Ammo that explodes into shards. The First one hit will most likely be exploded into gore. It will continue until it hits the flour scatters shards in 3x3+1 is serious damage with the extra in the direction fired.

I could see the addition of 'tar' (a viscous incendiary tar) being created from wood or coal possibly at the Ashery and then used as an ingredient (along with a suitable vessel) for the Batista Maker to create some kind of 'flaming tar bomb' that a catapult throws.  Also spreading tar on the ground and then lighting it would be possible.  In addition it would be a key ingredient in making a wooden sailing vessel when thats implemented.

EDIT:  Tar is also used in the making of torches.

Someone had an epic idea for catapult ammo not too long ago. You know the big cloud of dust and rubble that happens whenever something collapses? Knocks dwarves out and injures them? Well what if that happened whenever a catapult stone lands? That would increase its effectiveness by at least 2000%.

Exploding balista bolts would not be far off. But to make it realistic this should only happen if the bolt or rock hits something hard, like stone floor. I wouldn't expect shrapnel if it hits a lake for example.

If you made the head out of stone you would since by nature its a fairly brittle substance. clay too

Well it could happen, but what shape is the balista head? If its a typical arrowhead then it will just zip through the water and get stuck in the lakebed.

How about allowing catapults to launch corspes at your enemies wish release a misma cloud that makes everyone vomit!

If catapults generated a small cloud of dust upon impact, people would actually use them.

that works too. All you need is a a big enough net sling for the catapult and you can throw anything.
