BTW, is there any particular trick to finding giant cave spiders? I've never seen one myself, all I know is that they live in chasm biomes but none of the forts I've started there has ever uncovered one.

Considering how much giant cave spider silk goblins have access to, perhaps they know something I don't...

No clue, but back in 2D I found a shitload of them going back in adventure mode.

Start next to a chasm in a savage place and you will proably have atleast 1 or 2 GSC sneaking around.

A few versions ago, GCS were everywhere in caves. (They killed more adventurers than... well... anything else. =P) Nowadays they're much less common (Toady nerfed them by getting rid of them, which worked, but now my super-multi-ultra-epic adventurer can't find anything worthy to kill...) but you can still find them in and around chasms.

I one time tried to reclaim my old fortress near a chasm only to find that there were 8 GCS there, needless to say between that and the endless armies of ratman and antman ambushes, my army was ripped to shreds.

I've never personally had a GCS in any of my forts, but if you are lucky enough to have one, look for the STONKING huge web, then proceed to see some of your most mighty and useful dwarves die cheaply.

No that was what I said the other day when I discovered that my map has a cave pool filled with nasties. This wouldn't seem a problem at first until you realize that it is the home of a whole colony of cave spiders. I effectively cannot allow my dwarves to go outside or they all rush towards the pool at full speed to collect the webs and get slaughtered.
