I have taken upon me the challenge of playing a FPS-kiling game to end all FPS killing games! Here are my new fortress's starting status (I'm playing on a 3Ghz pc):
- 4x11 map (yep, you're reading right, 4x11)
- ULTIMATE CLIFFS (well ok, not ultimate... only the second highest kind of cliffs)
- Magma + Underground river + chasm + adamantine : for more creatures, and for fluid-based mechanisms later on.
- All ini settings on.
- And, ofcourse, a pair of cats...

So any one else ever tried something incredibly stupid considering FPS? Any ideas to help me reach fall by the end of real-life 2015? Oh, also bets are open for how much time it will take for my FPS to reach 0...
btw, i just started out, and FPS goes down to 20...

Every time I see "FPS" I always immediately think of First Person Shooters, rather than Frames Per Second.  Usually takes half a post before I realise what one they mean, and that's a confusing first half of the post.

lesson: don't think that because you heard people with 1.4Ghz computers could get 40FPS on a small map, then your 3Ghz computer could get 40FPS on a big map

Atleast, after turning off mani init file, and setting priority to high, and turning off all other programs, and crashing the computer twice, it now runs at 35FPS!!! that, ofcourse, is before the greatest danger to all fortresses arrives... useless immigrants!!!

Unfortunately, the cure for FPS woes from useless immigrants is usually magma or water, which cause FPS woes.

The answer of course is to kill them with fire bears.

Unfortunately, fire also causes FPS woes. The solution? Atom Smashing.
Smash the living! Smash the dead! Smash the objects! Smash the liquids!

Hahahahaha! Mine out the whole map and smash it all! Don't collapse the whole map, thats just craziness. Just mine it all out and smash it with Adamantine bridges!

Except for HFS. Same migrants for that, because once you clear that nothing stands in your way!

You want a FPS nightmare? search through the bug forum and find a post by me called lake failure, then gen a world with that seed and start in the exact same location.

A whole lake missing a side and draining down a few z-levels brought my computer to a screeching halt. I was literally getting maybe 1 frame per minute.

Also, starting a fort that somehow manages to have a drop so deep into the ocean you can actually reach calciarous ooze is hard on the fps too.

That's easy.  Start a fortress next to an ocean with an aquifer.  Dig a tunnel,  Enjoy a FPS of 1-3.

Having magma and pyromaniac imps is just an added bonus.
