Magma pipe depth?
« on: August 01, 2008, 05:01:38 am »

Hi
So i heard magmapipes don't always get to the surface, but how deep down can they end?
Do i have to dig of the bottom of the map to find it or is it just below ground?

Magma pipes shown on the embark screen (as a dark red water/sand tile) always exit on the surface now.

Magma pipes by definition always go all the way to the bottom z-level, like chasms and bottomless pits. Magma pools are the ones which don't reach all the way down (and can thus run out).

I see now that your question is where the top part of the magma pipe would be at, which i must say i don't really know. But if you embark on an area where you can see the pipe on the embark screen, it'll exit on the surface.

I have an underground magma pipe and pool 4 levels underground, although it might vary.

It does vary, but in my experience if they're not already exposed then they're generally close to the surface (~3-5 tiles down). Tricky part is in knowing where to dig so you'll breach it :P

I've never encountered a Magma Pipe that is more the 4 Z-levels below the lowest level of Ground.

If you put it up to show magma pipes "always", it will show underground ones.

I have one in my current fort in the fourth underground level.

It almost made it unplayable. You see, this is a double açuifer, and I was relying on the magma pipe to dig through. I feared not finding a way down to it´s level.

Now I have such a thing, and the pipe mouth itself is safely walled (as to prevent annoying fire imp meddling.

This is not always true.  I have a magma pipe which ends at z level -150(from surface.) The map continues down to z level -164.  I just think it is typical for magma pipes to not run out of space on almost all but the most absurd maps.

So what happens if you dig underneath the lowest level of the magma pipe?
