Uppity commoners
« on: August 19, 2006, 09:28:00 pm »

What exactly triggers nobles being annoyed by "pretentious living arrangements by a lesser"? I saw on one of the wikis someone said it was caused by a commoner having living quarters equal or exceeding the value of a noble's, but that's not the case in my fort and my nobles are all bothered by it (not very much, fortunately). Does the fact that some of the commoners have rooms equivalent in value to their offices? Most of my offices are just "Office", and the more valuable of my common sleeping rooms are "Quarters"; all noble bedrooms are "Decent Quarters". Do they just object to commoners having anything above meager/modest?

Nobles piss me off. I see absolutely no reason not to drown them as soon as they arrive.

Where do they get off making so many demands anyway? If anybody's going to have a nice bedroom, throneroom, etc, it's going to be the original seven founders.

...as far as I can tell, you still get all the benefits for having them even if they die...

At least, my justice and manager screens didn't go away when the respective dwarves died.  They might've stopped updating and functioning, though; I didn't notice.

Well, the justice one would've, certainly, since there was nobody to administer justice...

One thing I'd really like would be the option to break away from the homeland, declare your fortress an autonomous republic and allow higher-ranking dwarves to gain their positions solely by vote. It would be an interesting long-term goal, similar to that found in the classic game Colonization.

Still, it saddens me that my plans to give statues, tables and chairs to everyone's 3x3 rooms won't work out so well once the nobility shows up. It would be nice to be able to take care of all my dwarves' lodgings, not just those infested by the high-class socialites.

If those are all very high quality statues etc., enough to put them up to fine quarters or something, then you might get problems. But while giving my peasants exceptional quality furniture gets all my nobles grumbling, all nobles are still at ecstatic virtually all the time.

I had this problem before, my sheriff was pissed off at a 'lesser' having too good of a room. The thing is, the 'lesser' was my broker or manager, NOT a commoner.

If all your common quarters are Quarters and all nobles are Decent Quarters+, then it sounds like your nobles are jealous of eachother.

Does that mean it's impossible to get all your nobles to stop complaining at once? All of my nobles have it listed in their thoughts (although some are more bothered by it than others), even the low-ranking ones like manager and broker.

I think the jealousy stems from a lesser noble getting a nicer room.

Ideally, nobles of increasing rank should get more and more extravagant living quarters.  That way, my king once had a three stores 27x27 royal suite with artefacts everywhere, surrounded by magma to admire through his gem windows.  Never heard him complain about anything.

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

This thread is over two years old!
You be doing some necromancy? ;)

Anyways, it is unlikely it applies to the current version anymore...

Oh yes it does. Apparently the rank of nobles is represented by how high they are on the nobles screen. My count and countess consort complain because my Dungeon Master has a bedroom with an artifact bed, but it doesn't affect their moods very much.

Having a manager and a bookkeeper is great though, I wouldn't wanna lose them.

The useful nobles:
  • Clerk
  • Manager
  • Trader
  • Dungeon Keeper

Everyone else is just a waste of dwarfmeat. Delicious, delicious dwarfmeat.

I couldn't agree more. Hopefully all nobles will be useful one day.  ;D
