I don't have a credit card :( when I do, though, Toady is getting a good 30 quid off me.

July appears to be pretty much the best month ever in terms of donations, so yay.

Well i'm glad my $50 (55 actually, but that's so they get 50 at least) didn't get lost in the FLOOD from last month...now let's make August the best month EVER.  So I have said and so it shall be! Even if I have to donate another 5,000!!...ok, I don't even HAVE $5k...but still.

Well, I donated 50 dollars. I didn't use a credit card because I don't have one, and apparently I'm not old enough to get a checking account, so that's several options out the window right there. My best bet was to set up a paypal account linked to my savings account, which required the whole two under-one-dollar deposits thing, which required that I check my bank history, which required that I either call and ask or call and set up online banking, both of which required the phone which I hate. I eventually just went to my bank in person and set it up. It took less than a minute. So now I'm 50 dollars poorer, and Toady is 50 dollars minus some change richer, and I'm happier for it, especially in light of the events of yesterday, which involves a view-port resize feature being implemented. In short, a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

paypal is evil.  I've bad experiences with them.  BAD. Toady should prob look more payment methods.

The most convenient for international payment I'ved used is this phone based method from some country (sweden? switzerland?).  Just dial a long distance call to pay and it shows up in the phone bill.  Also less risk of credit card problems.  So convenient that it is good for controlled recurring payment too.

ahh.. found the site.  Toady, you may want to look at this...

http://www.daopay.com

I am still holding onto "Toady's Tithe" waiting... (for something more convenient that is NOT paypal)

Care to share these bad experiences? Pretty much everything I've heard about Paypal has been positive. Everything's worked so far, for me. Anyway, that service you suggested charges directly to your phone bill, if I'm understanding you correctly? I couldn't do that, as I don't pay for the phone bill at my house, and thus would be paying indirectly, which is too much of a hassle. I don't even pay for my cell phone, as we have some "family plan" thing, or another.

My "affair" with paypal:

It happened a few years ago when I was doing an online purchase of a software (can't rem what software by now though.  was some shareware.  and no, not a game.).  The way paypal works is that I have to fork out an "account" of i forgot how much (50? 100?) even though the purchase doesn't require that much.  fine.  I got an account and made my purchase and I left it for a while coz there wasn't another purchase being made.  Time passes when I saw another purchase I want else where but I found my account frozen.  I tried to activate it via whatever crappy means I forgot, but all I remembered was that it in the end, they told me that even if I want to unregister, I had to do something very troublesome and send something to their office with the instructions being very vague.  Think they purposely made the process put people off to discourage refunds, especially for people living abroad.  I remembered trying for a while before I just gave up on the rest of my money in that "account".  It was later that when I mentioned to a friend, he told me about all the crappiness of paypal and maybe some trouble with the lawsuits or whatever.  He showed me many sites/reports on those.  Usually, I read reports on the web with a pinch of salt, but in this case, I've been through it myself, I realised that I was not alone.  But being just one person, any action was not worth it.  That was when I swear myself off paypal.. I've paid online through other means, credit card, and even used daopay (by phone), but I don't ever want to touch paypal again.

As for daopay, I charged it to my handphone, so it is seperate from the house bill.  And even if I do charge it to house account, I'll consider "paying" my family directly much easier and safer than some online thing involving credit cards (or worse: paypal). I don't know about how much daopay skims off the paid amount though, but I thought Toady may want to look at it as an alternative for international supporters.  One more great thing about daopay : even people who don't have/want credit cards can show their support.

From a first reading, it seems daopay (a) wants my bank account number, and I've never heard of them so that's a stretch, (b) takes 30%-60% depending on the country (or more for a few), which is a very stiff fee (I can't believe how stiff that is, hopefully I read that wrong -- Paypal is 3%).  They also hang onto the money for 60 days and won't let you withdraw until you make 50 after fees, which isn't so bothersome for me.

I've seen a few other alternatives posted before, but nothing's ever worked out.  So far I'm stuck with Paypal and mailed checks/money orders.

I don't now if paypal still stick to that "hold-my-money-for-nothing" account system, but any chance of a direct credit payment WITHOUT an account?  I think it will offer more options.

I just did a recollection of all the stuff I paid for online.  They aren't necessary the best around, but rather those through which I actually made payments.  Just sharing my own experiences.

One thing I registered recently was Minilyrics which uses paypal and regnow.  needless to say, I chose regnow.
http://www.regnow.com/

Another was Mount&Blade some time back, which uses eSellerate which sets up a "webstore" (that has paypal OR credit cards)
http://www.esellerate.net/

As for daopay, I think that since there is no setup cost or monthly fees, perhaps it may be worth it to provide an alternate means of payment, even if it is higher in some countries.  You can see any "fish" that get caught in this "net" as bonus as you don't need a Fisherdwarf to man it.  As for you not having heard of it, maybe it is more popular in europe?  I can't bear any official/legal guarantees, but all I can say that it has been around for quite a while. I used it ard 4 years back for a period of a year, until I quit that online game, with no apparent problems.. (figured that if the online game host did not get the money, my game account would be frozen already).  If you are worried about banking account, why not open a new one (1-way account where you take money out and don't ever put in any yourself) just for donations?

Of course, the setup would be a little different as Bay12 is under donation scheme while the above methods are epurchases with register key and whatevereverever.  I would suggest that you set up a few standard donation amounts, maybe USD10, 20, 50, 100.  anything higher can afford to send check.

As far as direct payments go, our Paypal setup has never needed an account.  When you click on the Paypal button, get to their screen, and enter your amount with that "update total" button, there's a part on the lower left where it says "Don't have a Paypal account?" and you go from there, direct from a credit card.  It says "where available", and I don't know the restrictions -- I've gotten unregistered donations from outside of the US before though.
