[39e] Nemesis Unit Load Failure
« on: July 31, 2008, 04:06:18 pm »

I couldn't find this in the bug reports page, so I decided to just make a thread about it.  Anyways, 17 year old fort, world generated somewhere in the 38a-38c range and brought forward through all the DF versions.  About a minute or so into play from this save, DF pops up with a nemesis unit load fail rather reliably, on Vista Home Premium.  Not sure if it's related to the UAC VirtualStore feature or not, but it's there, at any rate.  I believe it's related to either Megabeasts or a siege, since I haven't had either in a fair while.  Save will be forthcoming once I get it uploaded to a filehost.

EDIT: http://sukasa.kicks-ass.org/region1.rar

EDIT2: Even with [INVADERS:NO], the unit load still happens.  No idea why, then.

Could it be a diplomat coming with a caravan or something?  In any case, this generally means the relevant unit file is either missing or corrupt.  Not much I can do about it, and it's hard to catch the root cause of it.

Hm, might be the elven diplomat, since he hasn't come before.  Thanks, though.

Forget that, the problem was that the save folder only contained 9 of THREE HUNDRED AND SEVEN files.  Screw me.

(btw, the problem was that when vista split the save into two folders, one folder got erased, whereas the 9-file folder in VirtualStore was kept, and for a whole game-year, I was playing on only nine of 307 files.  Somewhat amazing that DF worked at all on a skeleton save like that, XD)

I have just had this exact same problem. For some reason, on my USB stick, all the save files are there. However, somehow in copying the region off the USB and into my home machine's DF install, all but a few of the files were lost. Interesting, as you say, that the game could go on for as long as it did - I actually had an elf caravan turn up ok, but the crash was triggered (seemingly) when the human caravan arrived.

I don't really understand how so many files could have just not copied properly. Manually restoring the missing files from my usb stick to my latest save folder seems to have done the trick, but it may yet fall over.

Edit: The more I think about this, the weirder it is. Both the computer the world was generated on and my home PC are running XP, there isn't a chance that under some wierd circumstance, DF itself is deleting the files from the save folder? I can't 'prove' they were there originally, but they are on the usb stick and I cannot really believe windows jsut 'forgot' to copy a certain set of files when I copied the whole DF directory....

Maybe we should start a "Dwarf Fortress is doing weird stuff" thread, what with this and DF trying to connect itself to a comm port.

I sure hope I don't come home one night to find it's re-named itself Skynet...  :o

Just got the same error...

Checked my save folder and it was the exact same issue...Although I only had four files in there...

No idea how the hell that happened...

Seems the backup I had made a couple seasons ago has all the files...

Wierd, after restoring the files I was able to continue as described for many years, now I'm somewhere in 207 and it's happened again (possibly was going to be a megabeat?). I can't imagine files would go missing on 2 separate occasions 'accidentally' so I suspect this is a real bug causing some of the region files to get removed...

Edit: On doing some searching, it seems this bug has been reported and allegedly fixed at some point(s) in the past. Is it possible something in the most recent versions has caused it to resurface?

I would make sure you have a backup of the original region too, that's my new strat :-) But still no guarantees as it seems to add new files as it goes.
