Hmmm, I've killed plenty of giants and only seen crapy animal bone crafts and i've taken two human civs as my enemy and killed about 50 people...never seen a mayor/legendary though.  Killed a few elite types though.  I've got around 1000 or more gold coins, but there's nothing I ever find in shops that's better then what I have...(All I have is exceptional plate (iron) and steel battle axe/shield).

Only Dwarves and Goblins get better than Iron I think.

About the weapon thing.  From what I can tell, one of the new features is that characters now have a handedness chosen randomly when they're made.  They always wield the item in their main hand unless it's empty of course.  So if your character is right handed but has his weapon in his left hand and something else in his right, he'll attack with the something else.  The way I've found to fix this is to empty both of your hands and then pick up/take out whatever you want to use as a weapon.  You can then take out a shield or whatever.  Keep in mind that some weapons can be wielded multigrasp, and doing so makes them allot more effective.  to do that just make sure the weapon in the only thing in either hand.

For example, I recently had an adventurer with a halberd. He was my most successful to date. In fact, he's still alive somewhere in my world; I'm waiting for him to siege my fort (well, he was a human and a member of a civ that hates mine). Don't think it's going to happen though.

My only successful adventurer just died...bolts/arrows= too powerful.  I had quit without saving a LOT to get him as powerful as he was, but I decided to stop that...and then he got a few bolts in him...evil bolts.  He was almost Leg axeman and a lot of other skills..sigh.

I retired him once and did that...I killed..er..HE killed..a lot of people.  Over 100 notable kills and a few hundred normals.  Why did the children attack a man in full iron plate with a large steel axe?! WHY?!

Less painful than being slowly hunted down, one at a time?

I've encountered that problem before. My solution (well, actually borrowed from a fellow modder) was modding in a metric shitload of "chest" creatures that would drop random items when killed. I also made the Magic Weapons mod, to actually have random stuff to pick up. I didn't go so far as to make "+N" weapons, though I might (oh god the agony!), but a Fierce Steel Battleaxe of Slicing is already a worthwhile item to hunt for, right? I do get lots of "Large Pelagic clay dagger" or "Dull Oaken shortsword of Encumbrance", but that's just part of the game.

You can find metal crafts (also GCS silk crafts) around caves where the inhabitant has been stealing from dwarves.  I had a gold scepter that I didn't sell, and instead carried around to beat things to death with.

I think the traditional solution to lack of phat loot is to start a fortress, create some sweet items, then either just abandon it, or even better, let it become overrun by demons or other nasties.  No doubt you already knew this, but you can visit a fortress that you have created in fortress mode, but only if you have abandoned it or otherwise ended the game.

I remember after killing a whole bunch of wild animals and retiring, I somehow got a trinket for every kill (wolfbone earrings, bracelets, etc.)... I guess the town only rewards its local residents.

I recently almost depopulated an entire small kingdom and there wasn't a scrap of metal trinket anywhere (plenty of crappy metal weapons and armor). It was all just bone, leather, and wood. On one occasion, I found some dude with hippo ivory and I was like "woo! ivory!" and swiftly slew him and his entire town looking for more. There wasn't more. It was just more leather and bone, though every store cabinet carried exactly 200 gold, 600 silver and 2000 copper and there were again, plenty of metal weapons.

I then went and depopulated a series of dwarf forts. Again, not much in terms of trinkets. I kept a few steel things for throwing.

Then, I found a goblin fort nearby that carried dwarf bone and dwarf leather, and even some CSS. That seemed cool enough, but then I slew the demon (dunno what kind, it was red and threw fireballs, yet had organs) and got one +dwarf bone amulet+ for my efforts and large clothes.

Then I found another goblin fort way aways away and this one carried a ton of human bone trinketry and a ton of GCSS. That's really the best I've done so far. Unfortunately, I also ended that adventure with 19 kids generating lag for me.

One of my best adventurers led an attack against a dragon with a full group of elven warriors. One was a famous spearman who landed the first blow. He pierced the dragon's head, and poked out his right eye, the spear getting stuck in. He began to twist when the dragon bit down on his head, breaking it, creating an interesting situation where both had the other's life in hand. Unfortunately, the dragon only had to shake once.... But we finished the fight, and in the loot, I actually found a gold amulet. ;D Now thats lucky!
