I've been wandering around with my axeman, through judicious saves, killing cougars, bears, and packs of wolves...where can I find LOOT bearing (heh) monsters so I can buy stuff in towns?

The best way is to find a cave occupied by a (semi)megabeast that has gone on rampages.  There is "LOOT" scattered all around their caves that they stole from various towns.

The easiest way of finding such a cave is to take a quest from a town.

Ok, I killed an Ettin...got a little loot, but I can't seem to use stairways??

Thanks for the info....now, I keep getting my wep knocked out of my hand by this Cyclops..and then I pick it up but i'm using my shield as a wep instead, both shield and halberd in the same hand..how do I change weps?

You could try putting the weapon in your pack and taking it back out, but I would think that you would put your weapon in your free hand automatically unless your hand was broken/holding something.

I guess my hand was broken, didn't notice. Finally i'm just so tough the bloody (pun!) cyclops just bled to death during the fight.

Ok...now I just got in a battle with a bunch of wolves, got my hal knocked out of my hands..finished them all with my shield..and picked up my hal...in my other hand but i'm still using my shield for battle..even when I drop my shield (then im using my hal)...when I pick my shield up im back to shield instead of hal.

EDIT- Ok I dropped BOTH, then picked up the hal, then shield and I was fine..

 Drop whatever objects are in your hands. Pick up the weapon and take it out of your pack. Then pick everything else back us.

 I wonder if I can wield water...

Ok, now that my guy calmly dices Giants and Ettins...how can I find megabeasts to kill? Or goblin cities to lay waste?

Tee hee. Loot. As if the random cougars and such would be carrying gold coins and bits and pieces of armor and weapons. Who would ever believe such a thing?

You are not ready to take a megabeast on, the best bet would be to have people join you by talking with them with 'K'. I hope you also know that to travel you use 'T', the goblin cities are purple or gray pi symbols on the map.

For 'loot' I tend to do some small scale raiding of my own.

Step 1) Recruit a poop load of meat-shields
Step 2) Find nearest enemy city/civ
Step 3) KILL THE MAYOR (they tend to be legendary, so best to go for them first)
Step 4)
Step 5) Profit!

On topic:
I usually play my adv. mode with visible caves (new worldgen option). There're a lot of precious metal crafts in giants' lairs so you can buy full shops with it if you need it.

Goblin towers look like "pi" (greek letter) as it was said, but also note that if you use some character sets it is the "cabinet" symbol (it may be changed from pi to something else).
