[39e] Trade depot ignored by... well, everybody?

Did a search; found nothing. Here's the short version: I built a trade depot which should have access to all four map edges, but no characters will interact with it. When traders arrive, I get a "The traders need a trade depot to unload their goods" error, and my masons ignore orders to deconstruct the depot when I try it.

I built the depot several z-levels underground, connected to the surface by ramps. Checking [D]epot access showed the depot as accessable to all four map edges after it was built, but when I checked again after the first "need a trade depot" error, every square (even the depot squares themselves) flashed red, as if no depot existed.

Is the stone smoothed both under it and leading up to it?
