Arena designs
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:58:59 am »

I'm thinking about designing an arena at my latest fort, and I want to make it good. Do any of you have good designs that make fun or exciting fights?
My ideas for things to put in so far are:
Water with dangerous fish (untamed of course)
Pits with animals that can be released
Magma
Pressure plates linked to traps(spikes, pitfalls, etc. I want my guys to be in danger too!)
Pillars for cover and slamming foes into
Elevated areas with steep drops/narrow bridges over carp filled waters and magma, maybe underground cave-like tunnels filled with booby-traps

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

Some really good ideas there!
Heres my old fort

I've biult two there, use the points of intrest to find them.

But seriously thats some funky shit right there, you could have really interesting battles, especcially if you released a squad of gobbos against a squad of your dwarves!

I like the magma flood setup you have prepared for the gate house.

use floodgates to have switchable obstacles.
(for when unleashing un-disarmed missile enemies upon your champions)
raising bridges are usable too, but are visible when 'flattened'.

suggestions I like:
-designate the upper floor as a meeting zone for spectators
(don't forget to add fortifications for defence against missile troops. I just never fight those and have bars for preventing any 'escaped by being thrown into the crowd')

-Adding an armourstand and designating it as a barracks provides wrestlers sparring in the arena even when no volunteers are available.

some necessities:
-have multiple cells with cages linked to levers in a clear and simple system.

-provide ingress and access for two groups of combatants.

-provide for an 'escape route' so that the victimsvolunteers will actually move.
-pressureplates sensing them entering the main arena floor should be used to close off that escape route.

-have a system for erradicating the victor...for when the wrong one wins.
 (archers/water/magma/hallway of deathhonourous freedom)

-bonuspoints for having a sandy floor in the fighting pit. :)
