Armor and weapon skills
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:41:20 am »

I finally started getting grinding right, for the most part. My latest adventurer got to legendary wrestler and shield user. I decided to go legendary armor user as well. The harpies I used to train my other skills were too slow, so I went to fight some wolves. I put away my shield and let them have at me. They missed me a lot, but got the occasional hit. A few hundred points before reaching grand master, one wolf got my throat and doomed me.
What is the best way to grind armor user while minimizing the risk of having my throat torn out?
Also, I noticed that I barely gain experience while using the whip, even against conscious, relatively healthy enemies. How do I gain lashing experience faster, and is it really worth it?

Hitting someone with ANYTHING that doesn't have its own skill is training Armor User

He means wrestling of course.

ACP,
It's a good idea to be perfectly agile via sneaking or swimming or throwing before you go and throw yourselves to the wolves in order to grind shield and armor.

Best way to gain skill in a weapon is to parry with it.  Not sure if a whip works for th is, but, if you do it with a sword, you gain like crazy.

Step 1:  FInd an armed opponent, anything with a weapon

Step 2:  Put your shield in your backpack so you just have your weapon

Step 3:  Piss off guy with weapon and let him attack you, yo u should parry most of the shots if you're agility is high enough.

Every single parry gives you a point of weapon skill.

Hope that helps.

Playing with a skilled lasher can be pretty fun.  Lashing weapons can tear out eyes and throats and such - even take off heads, if you're good enough with them.

Actually, no.  It used to be wrestling, but for some odd reason it trains armor user skill nowadays.  Well, unless it's changed in the last few versions that is.  I'm still running .38b, due to reasons.

It trains armor user at a very slow rate, however.  Instead of 10 points per hit like most other skills, it goes up by 2 points per hit.  Takes a while to get anywhere.

River running. Get out your favorite weapon and chrage down your nearest river slicing up all the fish. Theres hundreds of them, and they hardly ever fight back, just keep attacking madly until legendary

Yeah, river running is a really risky thing.  If you find yourself stuck in the middle of a carp swarm, you're dead.

Also, I figured out the armor user thing.  Apparently, performing any action while wearing armor will train that skill.  Since fighting with an improvised weapon doesn't train any other skill, people think it uses armor skill since it's the only one going up.

This is an initial observation.  I haven't done any testing with it.

I don't know that it's relevant to Adventure mode, but my wrasslin and shield equipped Dwarf mode millitary is steadily gaining skill in armor use, if the rules are the same, you shouldn't need to put anything away.

I'm glad of it too, since I don't want them killing each other. I wish I'd struck something other than Iron for training weapons though, I'm worried about when it comes time to take them off of Wrestling and give them a shot at armed combat.

makes sense because most of the training would be learning to move in the armor, not learning how to get hit by things
