Very cool mapping technique
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:00:25 pm »

1. Go to legends and print up an standard map and an elevations map.

2. Open up both in a photo editor like Photoshop or GIMP.

3. Create TWO new, blank layers above the standard map.

4. Copy the elevation map onto both of the new layers (you're done with the original elevation map now, so you can close it if you want).

5. Hide the topmost layer.

6. Set the middle layer (the still visible elevation map) to Divide, and merge it down onto the standard map (background layer).

7. Apply a bumpmap, using the hidden elevation layer as the texture.  Fiddle with the settings until it looks good.

8. Et voila!

The fractal origins do show up on that quite a lot due to the highly-contrasting colors, but this is indeed cool. I think I'll do something like that when I get around making a map for my current medieval RPG scenario.

Thanks for sharing.  ;)

I still like my way (a 3d terrain viewer), but this is nice.
