Assigning Tombs to dead dwarves
« on: July 30, 2008, 04:29:27 pm »

Just what the title says.  Since tombs are rooms like any other, they can only be assigned to living dwarves.  By their nature, this can be problematic when an important dwarf dies before I get a chance to designate a tomb for him.  It'd be nice if I could give a guy a tomb retroactively without having to stick him in a free (and then unmovable) coffin and build a pretend tomb around him.

Yarrr. Specially when it comes to your starting 7. I'd also like to be able to move dwarves from a common coffin into an actual tomb so that his friends don't have to worry about him rotting.

The same should go for pets, especially when you have a named something-or-other animal that was killed. That way you can give that war dog that killed 20 goblins a proper tomb (and nobles could bitch at you to do it)

Off topic but I dig your avatar.  That's one of the coolest moments in the game.

Posting to second the original suggestion(s).  Having dead dwarves just drop off the map when they die --although appropriate in many respects-- does make it hard to give them proper respects.

Especially for those dwarves who have unremarkable lives -- but then die in the most awesome of ways, completely changing your opinion of them.

...of course, a lot of people would probably use this to retroactively assign their nobles in coffins that can be dropped into a magma pit, but heeeeyy, that's cool too...

Also, It would be nice if I didn't have to toggle every damn coffin before the dwarves will use it.

If you designate a tomb filled with coffins, and don't assign the tomb to anyone specific. Should that then become a "communal" graveyard of sorts?

It would be better than toggling 100+ coffins one at a time  :(

It would be nice if you could "deconstruct" a coffin without emptying it - so for example you could have a pile of coffins but later move them around, so you can put people in proper tombs when you've had chance to dig them out rather than leaving them stuck wherever you first put the coffin.

In my current fortress my Captain of the Guard's wife was killed by alligators a good while ago but didn't have a designated tomb. As a result she just got stuffed in some random available coffin and it would be nice if I could move her coffin into the Captains tomb.

Currently if you deconstruct an occupied coffin the deconstructors just chuck the bones across the room. :(

What kind of grim fortress do you lead?!?

But yea, I like this idea... often times dwarves get mauled by raccoons when I'm least expecting it and I find myself wishing I'd made them a coffin beforehand.

And very hard....took me a week to beat the digging machine boss, and I still haven't finished the game (damn the Japanese and their "lets have a boss right after this boss, no healing, oh, and we'll put a harder boss after that, followed by his second form and then, why not, another boss").

Still off topic, but...  Are you going for the normal ending, or the secret one? :)

Normal.  And yes, I voluntarily gave up doing the secret one.
