Dunno. I do kinda like the brook as a moat, myself. Still, the keep should be relatively modular, allows for expansion once the camp itself grows into a proper town. Darksaiyan seems to have a pretty nice concept going, makes an intresting courtyard area along with the keep itself. Dunno how much towers will actually be needed, with the parapets being what they are... Militia living space, perhaps? Of course, we'll need a militia to live in them.

Dunno. I do kinda like the brook as a moat, myself.

So do I, and it is still possible to implement one.  Just make the moat around the lower level, not the upper level instead.  Nothing says we cannot just create a moat around the Hill at the lower level.  Besides, we have an entrance down there anyways, better to protect that as well as the upper levels and the keep.

Hmm, now that I look at it, the design could have been much improved upon... I would enlarge the keep, since a 4x4 space would barely fit a catapult/ballista. Not even a staircase... The keep needs enlargement and a militia living in it, perhaps a training barracks and some archery targets too?

Remember if you don't have that much bone that you can use the channel behind targets to preserve the bolts.

Also... it would come as an idea to have an inner wall moat..., with a drawbridge as a gate..., or just get the water from the brook all around the hill fortress.

Alright, I think I've settled with a good design taking into account all of your suggestions. Here's a mock-up done in 3Ds Max of what it would look like

And this is what it translates into in DF

Each tower is three levels high: the ground level housing a ballista or catapult, the 2nd level housing an ammunition stockpile, and the 3rd level will be the parapets. The towers will only be accessible from the curtain wall walkway on the second level. The keep is 5 levels high, will house the main barracks, and have the 5th level as parapets. There's a fair sized courtyard on the ground level that will become either a sparring ring, archery range, or house workshops to produce bolts.

The next update is going to be a big one; humans, kobolds, and moods. Lot's of writing to do :)

Awe-fuckin'-some!
I'm looking forward to see it build :P I think I'm gonna build it in sketchup too. I'm not all that good at 3d modeling, but still, I'm learning :P Barely started modeling a small while ago.

Very nice, Dogman!  We even get to keep the natural "moat" created by the open space above the brook!

I like the 3D model, as well.  Not used to seeing people plan things out through modeling like that.

Heh, it's always better to plan ahead and visualize your future before dying horribly, isn't it?

Indeed, it is.  I never usually plan that far ahead though.  I just build what I feel is needed, and whenever I need it.  But eh, something tells me we are all doomed unless we build something to protect ourselves with soon.

Lots of stuff happening! Darkie and Mistem are friends now. I think they're the only two in the settlement so far. I changed Dwarfman's Dwarf to the child instead of the potash maker since, theoretically, a potash maker IS usefull. Human caravan finally arrived, and kobolds tried to crash the party.

From the journal of Mistem Athellal:
15th of Hematite, 376

The second butchery has finally been completed. Hopefully two of them, in addition to the new, closer refuse locker, will be able to keep up with Vucar’s hunting. I promoted one of the peasants from fishing duty to man it. Now that the excess corpse problem is taken care of, the question remains of what to do with all the hides. My first thought is to have the leatherworker make the hides into hardened leather armour. While I know it’s nothing compared to iron plate, it will provide us with some ease of mind, if only we had the soldiers to wear it.

I met with Haven, Cepheid, and Darkie today to discuss the possibility of constructing a keep up on top of The Hill. We all agreed on at least a two level wall system, where the topmost level would consist of parapets. Haven had an interesting idea to “reverse the corners” as he put it, and build them pointing inwards instead of out, claiming it would take less time to build them what way. Darkie, who up until now has been fishing in the brook, had asked if he could take part in the meeting. He seemed to have a glint in his eye when I mentioned building a keep. Perhaps he’s had some training in the matter? He came to us as a blacksmith, but who knows what talent Dwarves have in them. Domas, for example, spent his time before coming here as a pump operator and now he’s a rather accomplished miner. I think he’ll be good to have as a friend in this matter.

The following is an account of events as they took place on the 17th of Hematite, early summer, year 376

Mistem had been writing in her journal, as she often does, about the recent events in and around what she and all the other Dwarves came to know as The Hill. Not much had happened in the last two days since her meeting with Haven Cepheid, and Darkie. They hammered out some rough ideas about the keep and went back to going about their normal business.

Now, she had been writing. Her quill lay on the table next to her worn journal, abandoned by its master, for just moments earlier a shout rang through the modest halls of The Hill and caught Mistem’s interest, and spawned a little bit of fear. One doesn’t hear shouting all too often in The Hill, as every Dwarf around is kept quite busy with their duties, so when one does hear a rather alarmed shout, especially given the circumstances of the origin of The Hill, fear and worry are usually the first emotions to bubble up.

But this shout hadn’t been one of warning or anguish, but rather one of surprising rejoice. Haven had been inspecting the ground on top of the Hill for the future keep, and when looked to the northwest he spotted the unmistakable sight of a wagon caravan trumbling over the hills surrounding the river valley. Naturally this was cause for great joy as months passed by without any sign or hope of knowing some one, at least civilized, knows the Dwarves of The Hill are stranded out in the wilderness, lured and swindled by the false promise of the glorious fortress of Tongsrenown.

“Who be the leader of this settlement?” asked Nitho Istagthre, the appointed merchants guild liason, to the nearest Dwarf he could find. The response was a point and a mutter towards a Dwarf with a rather gleeful look on her, as far as Nitho could tell, face. He rushed over to the Dwarf and introduced himself.

“I am Nitho Astagthre, Merchants Guild Representative of The Empire of Pondering. Now who might you be little Dwarf?”

Mistem’s face hardened upon hearing the last of that, “Mistem Athellal, leader of this fine settlement. We’ve come to call it The Hill, but I assume you expected it to be known as Tongsrenown.”

“Tongsrenown, yes. This isn’t it?

“No.” Mistem replied flatly.

“We have traveled far to trade with the Dwarves of Tongsrenown, tales of its riches spread far and wide. Now where is it?” Nitho was becoming annoyed: the guild paid good money to finance this trade caravan to what was supposed to be a bastion of riches among the dangers of the wilderness. Instead all he found was a cobbled together settlement under a hill by a brook, with barely a stitch of wealth to claim.

“If you want Tongsrenown you will find it in the ruins to the southeast. There’s nothing there but bones and broken rock. If you want trade then The Hill is the only place you’re going to get it for weeks.” Mistem was trying her best not to blurt out some remark like ‘So the swindlers finally got swindled, eh?’ and have a laugh about that. But a Dwarf must always appear resolute and determined when in the company of non-Dwarves, especially around humans, and even more so around traders. An air of seriousness from a Dwarf is intimidating enough to play with the security of a calculating traders mind, and allow little deals that would otherwise be seen as exploitive be woven. Where else, then, would the stories of entire caravans being traded away in return for a handful of silk socks have come from?

Mistem wished she had a pair of silk socks right about now. All that was available for trade was a pile of crude stone trinkets, a modest collection of grim looking groundhog skull totems, and a couple of left over mechanisms. Even with the merchants put off their guard this was still going to be a tough trade.

“Very well, I’ll instruct my merchants to set up their wares for trading. In the mean time, I think we should discuss the terms of any possible future trade agreements. If you don’t mind?” Nitho motioned towards the entrance to The Hill,

17th of Hematite, 376

I heard a shout from the top of The Hill, Haven had been up there inspecting the grounds for the keep. I rushed outside to see what the commotion was and as the shouts became clearer, I discovered that Haven had spotted a human caravan cresting the hills to the northwest. We flagged down the caravan and directed them to our depot.

There was another shout, this time it was Domas. He was outside of the walls and apparently almost tripped over a Kobold thief tailing the caravan. Domas told me the drat thing ran off the moment he raised his pick to defend himself.

19th of Hematite, 376

When I went up to inspect what they’ve brought I found myself surrounded by everything we’ve ever needed but couldn't have. In fact, one wagon was almost entirely full of logs! It’s almost as if someone, or something, told them of our plight… I don’t know whether to take that as divine or demonic intervention.

It will take some time to get all of the tradegoods hauled up here to the depot and I just hope the human traders won’t lose patience with us and leave.

22nd of Hematite, 376

Another commotion today; Udil Erithdeduk, the brewer, took over a craftsdwarves shop and started running around the hauls collection various things, shouting about stone and gems. Luckily we had these in adequate supply for her. She’s holed up in the shop now working feverishly on something. I can’t tell what it is just yet, but I hope it’s useful.

26th of Hematite, 376

Another Kobold was spotted today trying to slip some wares from the caravan. Kibs kitten, Domas, scared it away though. What annoying things they are; kobolds. They skulk around and try to knife you in the throat with that big dagger of theirs and make off with your worldly possessions, yet a little mewling kitten scares the nerves out of them.

With both butcheries running day and night we’ve seem to run into a good problem; we have too much raw food. The food stockpiles are overflowing with tallow, meat, fish, and prepared meals. Logem is working on making more of it into good prepared meals but his efforts are barely keeping pace with the fishers and butchers. It wouldn’t be so bad if we had some barrels to store it all in, but hopefully that issue will be resolved once we get all that wood from the Human caravan.

27th of Hematite, 376

Udil finished his trinket he was working on. He calls it Mosusgukil, or “Roomlurched” it the common Dwarven tongue. It’s a felsite earring; looks painful to wear but seems to be worth quite a chunk of coin.

If it wasn’t for all the food lying around that needed to be cooked I’d have Udil carve up a proper wagon load of trinkets for the traders since he’s a legendary stonecrafter now; or so he professes.

I also met with Nitho again today. He and I hammered out a trade agreement. I’ve requested that they return next season with drinks, barrels, wood, an anvil, and most importantly, an axe.
In return they requested mostly rings and cloth.

28th of Felsite, 376

All the goods were finally moved to the depot today and I could start trading. We had enough for a single anvil of theirs, which would allow us to forge our own axe, or we could have acquired all of their logs plus food and drink.

In what must be a cruel joke from the heavens, they only brought with them toy axes. Toy. Axes.

I decided to buy out their entire stock of wood, meat, barrels, and alcohol. The sheer amount of wood we traded for should allow us to build beds, barrels, and bins with plenty to spare until we can get an axe.

That layout is pretty good. Gives me the feel of some of the old costal forts around here. Dunno if the seige engines will do you a lot of good to the south, but they should be handy for the north. Also might give the excess dwarves something to do between hauling jobs.

Meantime, Haven the Mason scribbles some memoirs...

'Wood! And metalworking tools and barrels and brew! A human caravan arrived today, looking for that nonexistant fort. Thankfuly they found us, and now we have a genuine anvil in our hands, along with enough wood to make some decent barrels and beds...

Also, our cook was taken by an intresting force, and made an exemplary amulet... If I recall the histories of Zon correctly, such a thing is not unknown in certain blessed fortresses. I've thought about it, and I'm going to recommend that Mistem start training a replacement cook for him. If I'm right, he should hold the fey secrets of stonecraft! Needless to say, combined with the priceless Aluminum ore we'd mined away, a source of amazing wealth could be had. Of course, once I tell him this, I'll have to get round to the other side of things. The 'Artifact' he created will need to be hidden away in a safe place. Tales have told of some strange, fey force being locked into the craft itself, causing all manner of sudden troubles. Evil could be drawn to it like flies if it were not properly safeguarded. Kobolds searching for treasures, goblin raids orchestrated by demons, and far worse... But so say the writings of the Zonites.

I say we lock tha' damn ring in our keep! If the lad will let us keep it, that is. I've been makin' a rough sketch of that fort we are buildin' between them brooks there. I hope yeh lads like it.
Note the little staircase there and the archery range.

@Darksaiyan:

I like that segregated Archery range, but the staircase is not what I had in mind. My reasoning behind wanting the parapets and towers only accessible from the 2nd level of the keep is that if a hostile force were to ever break into the courtyard, they would have to fight through the keep to get at the siege equipment and soldiers manning the walls, ensuring that the defending force will still be able to project fire outside of the walls in any such event.

Update time!

From the journal of Mistem Athellal:
26th of Malachite, 376

Vucar had a run in with a pack of wolves while out hunting today. Not as bad as it sounds: they proved to be easy prey from him and ran like any other group of groundhogs. They did scare some of the other Dwarves from doing their tasks, though. As a response, I’ve assigned Vucar to drive them away, as he’s the handiest with a crossbow out of all of us.

And we finally have a proper well built thanks to the Human caravan. They just happened to have a rope-reed rope available to trade. Hopefully now that means I’ll stop hearing complaints about lacking a proper well.

I’ve also designated a new dinning room to be mined out. While the old one we set up in haste after our arrival is cozy, its problem is exactly that. It’s too small, cramped, and it’s just sitting in the middle of the hall. The new dinning room will have seats and tables for 128 Dwarves, and there will be plenty of space to mill about when it’s time for a break. To help Domas with this I’ve assigned Lit Reglecad to be his apprentice.

10th of Galena, 376

Autumn isn’t too far off now, and to prepare for any Dwarven caravan that might pass through the river valley, I’ve asked Udil, the creator of Mosusgukil, to carve some stone trinkets for us to trade later. I should have asked him to do it sooner seeing as how the first thing she carved out was a masterpiece of a scepter. Haven was pretty insistent on the matter as well. She’s producing crafts faster than anyone else I’ve seen. Sorry Haven, your crafts may have bought us all that precious wood, but Udil’s will be able to buy out an entire forest. And they look nicer, too. In the mean time I’ve reassigned Logem to do the brewing while Udil is busy.

2nd of Limestone, 376

For the first time in what felt like years I’ve woken up on a nice, sturdy, comfortable bed. Fath Othasatis may not know much about carpentry but after sleeping in the dirt for months now any bed is a welcome relief. It’s slowly going but she is making beds for the rest of us.

The new dining room is starting to fill up, but it will take some time to make all the tables and chairs needed. Thanks to Domas’ skillful use of his pick, we have quite a healthy supply of stone now. Probably enough to build a proper wall or keep out of. Once the masons are finished with the dining room I’ll have them work on carving out blocks to use in future construction efforts.

12th of Limestome, 376
Thanks to Fath’s efforts Haven, Darkie, Cepheid, Domas, Udil, and I now have proper beds and rooms. Our cook and brewer Logem should be the next to get a bed.

And in better news, a Dwarven caravan has been spotted traveling down the river valley, and it looks like they are heading this way. Finally Lilar has seen fit to grace us with his blessing. Our fellow Dwarves will surely send word back about our predicament, and maybe now we’ll get some bloody answers.

I’ve ordered all of Udils crafts and the skull totems Morul has been making to be moved to the depot. We should have enough value there for an anvil and an axe.

15th of Limestone

Vucar returned to The Hill from one of his hunting trips earlier than expected. He was clutching his left hand and had some nasty scratches across the right side of his head. Before we could ask him what happened he passed out on a free bed.

I met with Zulban Keshanzulgar to discuss a trade agreement. I was just about ready to give her the usual explanation as to why we’re here and the myth of Tongsrenown, when to my surprise she told me they had passed Nitho’s caravan and decided to reroute here. Thank Lilar Dwarves take care of their own. Zulban agreed without hesitation to bring with them next year proper Dwarven subterranean crops and all manner of Dwarven alcohol. She also assured me that they have a good supply of Plump Helmets with them and are willing to offer them for trade. We can finally start farming properly now instead of relying on those above ground Wild Strawberry patches.

In return they wanted mostly soldiering equipment and glass windows. We have plenty of leather to make backpacks and quivers out of, and if we ever get a forge-works up and running there’s an abundance of white sand thanks to the hotter climate in this valley.

23rd of Limestone

This was a great day for The Hill. I met with the merchants after finally have gotten all of our trade goods to the depot and struck quite a deal. The Hill now has in its possession 5 barrels of assorted Dwarven alcohol, 3 bags of Plump Helmets,  and most importantly an actual iron anvil and a steel battleaxe! We can now call ourselves a proper Dwarven settlement.

Cepheid was rather adamant she get the axe. I didn’t want to deny her some simple pleasure as that so I let her have it. I hope she knows she’s going to have a lot of clear-cutting duty to attend to after this. Darkie will be rather pleased that we finally have an anvil for him to use. Now it’s just a question of finding a fuel source for the forges.

With Cepheid clearing the grounds of trees we will be able to go ahead with our plans to construct a keep and reinforce the palisade wall we hastily put up.

28th of Limestone, 376

Vucar is still bedridden with a broken hand and high fever. He’s drifting in and out of consciousness so quickly we’ve only managed to get a couple of words out of him. As far as we could tell he was attacked by a pack of wolves. The last time they came close to The Hill they were driven away with just a bit of shouting. This new pack must be rather vicious to attack Vucar like that. I do hope he fully recovers soon, we need our best (and only) Marksdwarf ready should any threat arrive.

We settled in a layer of felsite so we do have the chance of running into Hematite and copper veins. There's 3 clusters of Magnetite far to the west that's exposed to the surface as well. Could set up a miners camp there some time when we have the resources.
