I AM GOING TO CHAIN GOBLINS TO THE BATTLEMENTS NOW. THANK YOU.

On this note though... do chained gobbos attack anything that comes in range, or are they "caged" and unable to attack?

Oh god, if they can't attack, then you have training dummies.

Okay, sentient, living, conscious enemies being used as punching bags is a whole new level of Dwarven Justice.

This ... is ... so ... awesome. So many different uses (sadly, mostly decorative). The idea of hanging peeps over a chasm for eternity is awesome. Ooh, you could even hang a bunch of kittens from your entranceway and hook the chains up to mechanisms. Then, drop them when goblins attack. So much more stylish than a silly little trapdoor...

If only we had retractable chains, then we could dip elves in water, retract, dip in magma, retract, and presto! masterwork obsidian statue of an elf.

I know roped dwarves use items around them, so probably can attack as well.  I'd say a roped gobbo is dangerous* still.

*as much as they ever are.

I wonder if it's possible to turn donkeys into giraffes this way.

I just tried this with a 1-z level drop, they fall down and are still on the chain. They don't choke however. I'm currently channeling for the second z-level.

The real question of course is if the chain/rope will suspend them or if they'll fall however far you allow them to and just act "chained"

Tested it with a 2 z-level drop. The test subject gets disconnected from the rope. :(

What was the material used in its restrains? Dwarves are notorious for escaping from non-metal restraining gear. And non-metal cages are not even considered for justice containment purposes. (Not that it actually matters, physically speaking. But it might become important later in development.)

Maybe the rope "snapped"?

So, hanging is limited to tying them to a rope and dropping them so they die of falling damage?  :P

I used a rope reed rope.

Try it with a metal chain. Harder to break, and harder to escape.

Don't despair, fellow DFers. Even if we can't hang people, and they always survive the fall... that just means we can set up chained minions to sit on a floor hatch, one Z-level above our entrance. Attach the hatch to a pressure plate... when gobbos get into the entrance room, they hit the plate, the ceiling opens, and chained war dogs/cheetahs/eagles/whatever fall down on them?

Actually... can you assign DWARVES to chains? Just keep stark raving mad warriors up there...

when they stood on an adjacent square (for instance by using a level attached to floor bars), or did you destroy the square on which the chain was installed?  If it was the latter, you should re-do without taking out the chain square.

Just checking!
