Best way to capture a Giant?
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:57:38 pm »

To start off, have a look at my fort: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-3177-banehollow
See the giant in the caves? I want to capture it.
Placing cage traps and all that is no problem but the problem is getting her to walk into the traps.
Undisturbed, she'll just stand in one small area of about 5 tiles and only move when I send those useless soap maker migrants down there and if I try to place cage traps close to it my mechanics will become dwarf bacon.

How am I gonna capture it?

Also, I'm new to this forum so sorry if this is the wrong section.

Do native creatures still ignore traps?  If so, you're basically out of luck ... unless you can get her to fall asleep on the cage trap or something.

I'm not an expert in giant behaviour, but you could try flooding the cave from one side, then close off the watter supply once he's in the trap. That is, if he doesn't ignore traps...

I built on a giant occupied site too, at first i was worried it might decide to come out and steal stuff while killing dwarves, then i had the best solution to keep it and the giant bats away from my dwarves.

I built a floor over the cave entrance.  ;)

Do giants sleep?

If they do, you could lure the giant into a small area complete covered by cage traps and trap it in there.  Then when it falls asleep, it should be trapped in the cage.

It is risky but if you knock it unconicess then it will fall victim to a cage trap, but you might kill it in the process.

Or it might kill the brave dwarf and become untrainable.

You can't train sapient creatures anyways. Or you'd have war goblins running around your forts.  :P

I don't think they do, as I have a couple of batmen and few Unicorns on one of my saves.

Those still count as wildlife. Native creatures are mega and semimegabeasts. Also possibly cougars and junk who settle in caves after fighting adventurers in worldgen.

Wait, if the giant has killed dwarfs I can't tame it?
Great, I've been using him as a migrant disposer for years now.
Oh well, I might as well just kill him and turn his bones into a sweet armor for my guard captain to wear.
