version 21.100.19a
« on: August 16, 2006, 05:26:00 pm »

Every menu selection that uses the "n" key has been replaced with "Shift + R Menu", whatever that is. It is probably just a result of me not installing the new version property ( I overrided everything instead of making a new directory )

I had a suggestion for a feature. How about an option for an auto-save?

The menu gives me (n) for burial receptacle.  It could be that your interface.txt file got mixed up in the version switch somehow?  I don't link Shift + RMenu to any keys in the one that's provided.  Maybe your display strings for N aren't set?  If you copied over an old interface.txt, it might be missing some display strings.  I try to mention the changes I've made in file_changes.txt.

What does an autosave do?  Save and copy your region file/folders over?

I meant something that saves your game every 10 or 30 minutes or so automatically.

I know, but where do you want them to be?  Like, several lists of your world when you press Continue Game?  Latest auto save?

I found an error. When I saved in adventurer mode and then tried to load the save the game crashed. This hasn't happened with any other save on this version though.

You can send that if you still have that.

Direct DLs (there are hosts around, no clue on those):

95_19c, 8/15: 524
95_19c, today: 76

Hm well I suppose you could have it have 2 slots for the autosave. It would alternate between them, that way, if one of them is corrupted during a save, you can load up the old one. Manual saving could use a different slot.

Personally, I don't see why an autosave 'feature' would be needed.

Having an alternate save to go back to seems like save-scumming to me, and my heart is naturally against it.

That's why you'd make it optional. You might think it is cheating to not want to have to start over every time the save game gets corrupted but I sure don't. If someone wanted to abuse save games, they could simply copy the /save directory.

In the full game, I would agree, but here we're  both more likely to crash and more likely to restart because of new versions.  So it's especially painful to lose hours of work when you've gotten to the more advanced stuff because you were too engrossed to remember to save.  And especially when the save process itself seems to still have a few kinks, and will ruin your *previous* save unless you went out of your way to copy it manually...

OTOH, I would not like a forced long pause too often either.  I guess I should just force myself to save every 6 months or so, when I see the season change.

Right well I don't think it would be too hard to have it allow you to pick how often to save.

Having an auto save feature does indeed feel like save scumming, but I think if it's something easy to add which I imagine it would be since it's just an additional check every X turns or so, then it might be wise to add in an option for it in these Alpha versions. The game isn't entirely stable as of yet and it takes a long period of time to get anywhere in it so having an autosave for people who want it seems like a decent idea as it also helps people expose bugs by pushing their games out a bit further without the need to restart from scratch again.
