How about they just explode in a 5 tile radius?

That would be great: "Job Cancellation: Urist McDwarf has exploded."

Once diseases are introduced perhaps failed moods could cause some sort of mind fever that could be spread to your other dwarfs. What the symptoms of this fever are? There are a whole slew of options.

Why not let the moody dwarfes aquire the ressources in other ways then from stockpiles ?

Just before going nova, they could check the fortress for substitutions ...

I think the emotional extremes should be turned down a bit, and quality standards for items raised a bit. Anyone can get a legendary dining room fairly easily, and that alone is enough to make dwarfs tha eat in it completely ecstatic. That, and bad moods are retardedly deadly. One dwarf's death should not be enough to chain-react the whole fort into chaos, and it currently can if that person knows enough people.

Morale should be more fluid instead of black and white, maybe happy dwarves work a little faster, and ones in bad moods are less efficient or even slack off from doing their jobs. Some kind of benefits/disadvantages to actually taking care of your dwarves. And on that same note, When is there ever going to be some kind of benefit to having nobles? Or penalties for killing them?

Maybe I need to start my own thread...

You could have inefficient moods.

Examples:

Surly Mood: Urist never gets out of anyone's way when he steps on them, slowing both down, and there's a small chance he smacks the guy if he thinks he can get away with it.

Gluttonous Mood: Urist eats way too much, and vomits all the time.

Melancholy should sometimes result in alcoholism - the dwarf will occasionally go in and drink 4-7 drinks and run around throwing up for a while. If he drinks 7 he falls unconscious and throws up while unconscious.

Claustrophobia: Dwarf exits to the outdoors and will not go into any Inside or Underground area.

Avoids Crowds

Laziness (lots of breaks, tasks take longer)

Disobediance (turns off own jobs)

Poisons the water source and/or food and drink stores

Sabotage of levers by re-assigning them to other devices (especially those devices near magma or water).

Destruction of engravings and high quality / value objects - even artifacts

Theft of objects owned by other dwarves

Theft of furniture, tossing his own furniture in an empty hallway or a refuse pit.

Etc.

Maybe a failed fey mood could make a dwarf go hermit. He'll wander around the area catching fish etc. and avoid other dwarfs.

A failed dwarf could make a dwarf realize he needs change in his life.

The results of this could be a change in personality, as already suggested. But perhaps it could mean that the dwarf might loose experience in the skill that was related to his failed artifact, this experience could then be partially transferred to some other skill.

Another cool thing would be if the dwarf would steal some armor, weapons, food, and other supplies, and then just leave your fortress in search of adventure and maybe something to give his life meaning again.

I came up with a nice forumla once.  It didn't alter the prices of items, just averaged out room quality better.

Sabotage of levers by re-assigning them to other devices (especially those devices near magma or water).

I don't like this, as there's no way to tell what a lever does via the game interface without pulling on it.

I don't think so, as I've gotten legendary with grey stone.

Edit: Opening up my RoomValueCalc excel sheet...your room should be worth roughtly 864162* (no walls, becuse of statues) or 864259* (with walls).  My pproposed system (a while back) would make this room worth 36485*.  Both of those are "royal" quality (10,000+*).  No idea how you managed meager, ONE of those tables in a room by itself would be "Grand."

My suggestion for failed moods is that if a dwarf is unable to get all the materials he wants, he might try to make the artifact anyway without them.

However, without all the proper components, the construction is fatally flawed, resulting in a cursed artifact that has dire consequences for both the dwarf and the fort.

This would probably have to wait until more artifact powers or magic are implemented, but possible effects could include invasions of megabeasts or demons, the creation of a new pit going down to the centre of the earth, the dead rising from their graves, or the fortresses own civilization turning against them and attacking them because of the evil they have created.

I'd be happy if more ways a dwarf would go crazy for a failed mood were added.  Personally would enjoy seeing a dwarf trying to bite off his own body parts and break bones in his body.
